Hello, my name is Lisa. I have a special talent for working with young people who have unlimited potential but need one on one help to master a subject in which he/she is struggling. I have worked for the Free Library of Philadelphia as an outreach worker and an After School Leader since 2005.
These two positions allowed me to work closely with grade school children to strengthen their basic reading, spelling and math skills. My outreach work this summer allows me to work with a diverse population ( young children of West African and Russian immigrants) who speak English as a second language. They possess a strong desire to master their new language.
In addition, I have worked with high school students to write term papers, research assignments and essays for college. The students and I worked closely to help them express why they wish to attend a certain college, how they arrived at their decision to select a school and focus on a particular major.
I am a voracious reader and I have worked as a proofreader for a local newspaper after college.
I am patient and allow the student to progress at their own rate. Try to identify each young person's strong points and encourage them. Hello, my name is Lisa. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a tutor during my undergraduate studies. I was able to take a CLEP exam in history and get credits to graduate without taking the required classes because I have a very good background in American History.
