About Sarah

I have seven years of tutoring experience by now. I started tutoring my sisters, expanded to my cousins and then started volunteering at the public library. One-on-one tutoring meant that I could go at my students' pace. This helped me learn their unique strengths and weaknesses and in turn, I could tailor my teaching to suit them. Until I graduated high school, I tutored K-12. I loved teaching young ones the concept of money as much as I loved teaching pre-calculus to seniors. Watching them grasp a concept, reapply it elsewhere and grow to be a better student brought me as much joy as it did them.

College gave me the additional insight into developing structured lesson plans, different learning styles and what advanced writing looked like. Learning these skills allowed me to expand my services. For the past five years, I have tutored adult students in test prep and writing. I am also a competent proofreader.

I still volunteer my K-12 tutoring and coaching services in my community. Tutoring for me has always been about providing meaningful services. The joy of watching students gain a sense of achievement from their success continues to inspire me.

Currently, I work in West Philadelphia High School as a College and Career Prep Coach. In addition to my regular duties, I run a SAT Class and tutor Math, Biology, Physics, English and Social Studies. Additionally, I also run workshops on resume writing, local labor market, national service opportunities, 21st century soft skills and college readiness. What does all of this mean for you as a student? It means that not only can I tutor you in your desired subjects, but I can also design and implement a curriculum beyond your classroom.

Contact me to schedule your next tutoring appointment! I am available during weekday evenings and throughout the weekend. Resume and background checks are available upon request. I am available to tutor online, at your house or your local library!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I minored in anthropology at The College of New Jersey. I combined my minor with my History and Women & Gender Studies major to do field research and ethnographic studies. I did field work in Trenton, NJ and also employed ethnographic methods during my thesis writing. My thesis writing focused on collecting oral histories from South Asian migrant communities.

College Counseling

I currently work as a College and Career Counselor at West Philadelphia High School. I run a SAT class, workshop on resume building, local and national labor market, national service opportunities and various kinds of workshops regarding college. I work with 10th - 12th grade students on college prep including the Common Core app and FAFSA. I also work with them regarding scholarship and internship opportunities.

Proofreading

In the past, I have helped undergraduate students proofread their papers and specialize in proofing and editing social science and humanities papers. I also have experience with proofing dissertation papers. Proofing services include looking for flow of paragraph and sentence structure and ensuring citations are correctly placed throughout the paper.

Public Speaking

I currently coach students from West Philadelphia High School in public speaking. My curriculum requires them to find real-life opportunities to present. In the past, my students have presented to CEOs from the Mayor's Office of Philadelphia on the subject teen sexual health, #BlackLivesMatter and student activism. They have also incorporated public speaking skills into their documentary projects that they do for their Multimedia Class.

Social Studies

In my experience, students mainly struggle in social studies because they either have trouble with reading comprehension or with memorizing facts and figures. Other students may not have adequate study skills for the subject or are simply bored and unable to study it by themselves. I am able to help with issues in reading comprehension, teach note-taking methods and ease anxieties around the subject by styling my teaching methods to their needs.

Study Skills

As a current College & Career Promise Corps Ambassador, I also ensure that my students have the best tools to succeed academically. At West Philadelphia High School, most students do not have study skills or know about test taking strategies. I usually do one-on-one or small group workshops on study skills. Curriculum includes understanding attention spans, concentration capacities and tried and true methods such as mnemonic devices. Students who have received workshops have experienced grade improvement from C- to a B+ in 4 months.
