About Gaby

I have studied art, painted and shown my work, but my main passion is pencil drawing and helping students. I used to run a gallery specifically for students and recent-graduate emerging artists, giving them their first taste of showing their work publicly, and I enjoyed educating them on presentation and preparing their work for exhibition.

I have worked as an art/photo director, graphic designer with a master’s degree from Pratt Institute. With many years of experience in print publishing, I have led the creative direction, rebranding and design for magazines covering fashion, travel, women’s services, business, fine art and design. I currently teach History of Design at Rutgers University and serve on the Board of AIGA Philadelphia.

I can go through the areas of creating art focusing on the student's interest, which could include collage, mixed-media, and for drawing, lessons on contour, object/figure, perspective, abstraction, shading, value, using different materials, and also painting opportunities, oil and acrylic. I have taught general Visual Communications, and History of Design, so I have a strong foundation. I have taught InDesign, and have used it as an expert in magazine design and production.

Contact me to learn more, and let me know what you would specifically like to learn! I am very interested in working together!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have studied fine art all throughout school, focusing on drawing. Although abstract, I have a foundation in representational, still life and figure drawing. I would bring a student through materials like charcoal, conte crayons, pastels, and different kinds of pencils and go through compositioning through collage, representational, perspective and shading studies, to abstraction depending of what the student was looking for.

Graphic Design

I am an art/photo director, graphic designer and typophile with a master’s degree from Pratt Institute. With over 17 years of experience in print publishing, I have led the creative direction, rebranding and design for magazines covering fashion, travel, women’s services, business, fine art and design.

Painting

I have studied fine art, including painting. I have also had the great opportunity of working closely with artists and have curated many painting exhibits in Philadelphia, and I have casually taught friends both oil and acrylic painting, who have encouraged me to tutor.
