University of Pennsylvania (English, Environment)
Hello, WyzAnt! My name is Lily and I'm a young working professional in Philadelphia. I tutored all throughout high school, and have worked in college classroom settings for the past four years at UPenn as a teaching assistant, after graduating as an undergrad. I have also led book groups with participants ranging all over in terms of age and experience, and absolutely love doing that.
I'm passionate about learning and working with, not against, students' natural inclinations and curiosities to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
I am happy to work with students to complete weekly homework or specific assignments, or to work in an ongoing way on certain skills like writing, reading, storytelling, organization, and more. My largest areas of expertise are in and around reading and the kinds of analysis, synthesis and editing that lead to great critical and creative writing, but I am very capable of working on any subject.
I especially support and understand how to approach math from an "English major's" point of view, that is, a concepts-based approach rather than rote formulas and memorization
I've been a bookworm all my life, and english with a concentration in creative writing was my major in college. I currently work at a literary arts nonprofit, and in my job as teaching assistant grade papers, lead office hours where I coach students on their writing, prepare discussion materials - so these English classroom skills are still very much part of my everyday life!
As a student, I was constantly struggling with how to stay organized and on top of my studies and myself, and intuitively learned many strategies along the way that I would be happy to share with students now! My current job requires me to do, conservatively, 100 things at once, so I still utilize these organizational skills on a daily basis.
Please contact me with any questions or to schedule a session. I hope you'll find that I'm a patient and caring person who believes so strongly in what can be accomplished in the one-on-one tutoring environment! Hello, WyzAnt! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
