Georgetown University (Biology, Economics)
Drexel University (Master's)
I am a current Master's in Public Health student at Drexel University, and I graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Psychology, Economics, and Biology. I have been tutoring students since I was in elementary school on a consistent basis. I enjoy tutoring because I believe that all students are capable of doing well if they are taught in a way that makes sense to them. Every student has a different style of learning and it is important to tailor teaching styles to match how the student learns. I thoroughly believe in the power of education and I wish to help students reach their maximum potential and do well.
I tutor students of all ages and also help with general time management and organization skills. I also offer college counseling advice and services. I tutor the following subjects and standardized tests: elementary, middle, and high school Math, English, Reading, Science, History, Spanish, PSAT, SAT, ACT, and GRE.
I offer many different styles of teaching., especially in Math. Some math concepts are difficult to understand if not explained properly, so I do my best to offer different types of explanations by bringing in real world examples to help students learn the concepts, and not simply memorize them.
I scored extremely high on the ACT English section as a high school sophomore, and I try to explain the methodology of the questions in order to help students master the English section like I did. It is important for students to understand the concepts and practice many questions in an effort to master the style of the ACT.
I attended an elite, college preparatory private school in Miami (Palmer Trinity School) that provided me with the necessary resources to apply to college. Not only did I receive tailored advice, but I also learned what to look for when applying to colleges. After going through the process, I was accepted to all of the 23 schools I applied to, and received some sort of scholarship from all of them. As a Georgetown University graduate, i believe I have the skills and experience to help other students with their college application process.
I'm an extremely patient and kind tutor who cares about the overall well-being of the student, not just their academic performance. I understand that sometimes poor academic achievement is a result of circumstances and not simply intelligence. I wish to help other students perform well academically so they can receive the benefits and opportunities that I was fortunate to receive as a result of my superior academic performance. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Due to my background in economics, mathematics is a personal strength of mine and I enjoy helping student enjoy it as much as I do. Tackling the ACT requires a thorough understanding of the material, coupled with strong test taking strategy to ensure that the student is able to perform well under time constraints. I scored a perfect score on the ACT and have helped many students score a 30 or above as well.
I graduated from a private, college preparatory school in Miami, FL called Palmer Trinity School, where I had exemplary college counselors at my constant disposal. These counselors were in consistent contact with me all throughout high school to ensure that I was taking the proper steps to prepare myself for college. They made sure I challenged myself and took the necessary courses that would best prepare me for the pre-med track in college. They also made sure that I took the necessary college standardized tests on time such as the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and SAT Subject tests to ensure that I was always one step ahead of the process. My counselors also sat down with me on a regular basis during my junior and senior year of high school to review and edit my college essays and applications. They also provided me with a wealth of knowledge about different universities I should apply to, and what I should be focusing on when comparing schools to each other. I applied to 21 universities, including Georgetown, Columbia, Duke, UF, UM, FSU, Boston University, USC, Boston College, NC State, NYU, George Washington, Brown, American University, Stony Brook University, and more. Not only did I receive acceptance letters from every school, but I also received scholarships from every school. I decided to attend Georgetown University because they offered me the most enticing scholarship and their values aligned with my own. After going through the process myself and being extremely familiar with the Common App and individual school applications, I helped numerous students younger than me with their college application process because I believe that is an extremely crucial process and every child deserves to know the ins and outs of the process. I believe that I was very fortunate to have an incredible college counseling office at my high school, but I also recognize that other students around the nation are not afforded that privilege and are therefore unaware of little, but important things that can make or break a college application. I provide assistance and advice with resume reviews, and college essays. After attending Georgetown, and having friends from many other universities, I make it a point to share my experience with younger students so they can have some more insight in what makes universities different from one another. Of the many students I have helped, they have been accepted to universities such as NYU Tisch, UM, UF, UCLA, USC, Boston University, Georgetown, George Washington, and UM. As a first generation college student, I understand the challenge of applying to college and understanding the FAFSA, and I hope to help facilitate the college application process by serving as a great mentor to other students.
I have worked with numerous 5th graders to improve their math, reading, and overall study skills in an effort to prepare them for middle school. Many of the students I have tutored eventually worked with me to do well on entrance exams to private schools. I am proud to say that all of them performed well and were accepted to wonderful private schools.
I have taught many students pre algebra because it is a crucial subject to learn in order to succeed at higher level mathematics. I have helped students perform well on private school entrance exams, SAT, ACT, and math classes.
As a current SAT Prep Teacher at a community center, I am very familiar with the new SAT test format and I am able to tailor individualized SAT tutoring sessions for students based on their strengths and weaknesses. I have been teaching SAT Prep for over 5 years now and thoroughly enjoy doing it because I believe that every child should be able to attend college and pursue their education.
After receiving a perfect score on the SAT as a sophomore, I helped my fellow peers prepare for the SAT and achieve high scores. After high school, I continued to help students prepare and perform well on their SATs and ACTs. The each section of these standardized tests require different test taking strategies. As a result of this, I teach students the material and concepts they need to know, and I teach them effective test taking strategies so they can perform well under time constraints.
