About Elsbeth

I believe that there are a few key steps that must be taken before being able to successfully facilitating learning: getting to know a student and building trust, discovering strengths and finding ways to utilize them, and building a love of learning and an enthusiasm for the process of learning, while continuing to feed that enthusiasm, especially when challenges are encountered in the learning process. Without these steps, the progress of the student will be much slower, if there is any at all.
One on one teaching sessions are uniquely designed to better accomplish these steps. Perhaps your student's teacher has been too busy to really get to know him or her, or perhaps their personalities simply clash, which makes the learning process much more difficult for your child. This could have even led them to build barriers between themselves and learning.
I can break down those barriers, discover your child's strengths and use those to help them conquer their difficulties. I'm very good at building trust with children. I worked as a camp counselor for 5 years with ages 9-18, and I've helped a lot of kids find their confidence and achieve things that they thought were impossible. I've also been working one on one helping students improve their writing since I was in high school. I started helping 4th graders with their writing portfolios at my old elementary school when I was fifteen, and in college I did a teaching internship there and at my old high school.
I also gained a lot of experience in 6 years of creative writing workshops. I was lucky enough to go to Interlochen Arts Academy to study writing for the last two years of high school, and I spent all of college continuing to rigorously study the art of writing and the creative collaboration/critical experience one gets from writing workshops. I also learned a lot from getting a liberal arts education, where not learning what to learn but how to learn is the goal.

Reading and writing are essential skills for success in any subject. If your child is struggling to read, they are running into walls every direction they turn. We'll work on the five essential elements of reading: comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonics, and phonemic awareness—until they're reading confidently. I had difficulty reading when I was first learning, because I was too nervous about making mistakes in front of my teacher and parents. I tried very hard to avoid reading with them, and it slowed my development, which of course made it even harder for me to address my problems. So I know how hard it can be for your child to confront and work through their difficulties. With the comfortable judgment free environment that I can provide, however, your child can relax and be a little less afraid of mistakes.
Your child will also need to be able to communicate in every class what they've learned in writing. Being able to explain ideas well in writing will also strengthen their ability to communicate well verbally. We'll work on the organization of ideas, proper sentence structure and grammar, and originality, as well as addressing problem areas that might arise.
Often, getting the first word on the page is the hardest part of writing. The more you practice any form of writing, the easier it gets, so I strongly encourage my students to keep a journal and work with them on incentives to write in it every day. This will improve their writing and get them in the habit of writing as a life practice outside of individual assignments.

Please contact me if you think that I would be a good fit for you and your student. We can discuss your child's needs, goals, and when to get started!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
