About Sierra

Hi there!

My name is Sierra, and I'm a computer science and mathematics student at Penn State. I have more than three years' experience tutoring late elementary through college-level math. I have taken college-level calculus (derivative, integral, and vector), matrices, and statistics/probability, and I implement precalculus and calculus daily in my classes. I LOVE teaching the Singapore method, but am happy to abide by the school's curriculum.

Give your child a leg up and let me teach them how to code! My lesson plans tend to cater to children and preteens (8-14 year-olds), though I also have experience in preparing high schoolers for the AP comp sci test. I like to start my younger students off in the basics of algorithm building and logic (my undergrad degree is in logic) using Scratch (a nifty visual language created specifically for children) and various educational computer games. I have intimate knowledge of C++, Bash and Java.

I encourage you to look at my resources tab to get a better idea of my teaching style. There, you can find blog posts and my responses to problems various students have posted. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I am currently taking a high level math class so I implement algebra on a daily basis. Algebra is so incredibly important - it follows you all the way up into college level math.

C++

I have taken two c++ classes. I have been programming in c++ for several years. I have written over 30 programs in c++.

Calculus

I have taken differential, integral and vector calculus at a college level. I received A's in all three subjects. I have experience tutoring college students and high school students for the AP calculus exam.

Computer Science

I am a Masters student in Comp Sci at Penn State University. I know Java, C++ and am familiar with web development.

Logic

My degree is in analytic philosophy so I took college-level classes in informal logic, logic and analytic philosophy. I was a logic and writing tutor and a HS debate coach.

Precalculus

I recently reviewed precalculus for a class I need to take this semester. So even though I haven't been in high school for quite some time, these subjects are still very fresh in my mind!

Trigonometry

I recently reviewed trig and precalculus for an electrical engineering class I need to take this semester so even though I haven't been in high school for quite some time, these subjects are still very fresh in my mind!
