About Ashley

I've always loved helping students with their literary skills. I believe that refining one's abilities to read and write well are rewarding in so many ways outside the classroom, and I always strive to make my students see just how important these skills are to good communication, critical thinking, and problem solving. The goal of my teaching is to push my students to think more broadly and deeply about their own potential and to help them achieve it in a creative and highly efficient manner.

I have experience tutoring students from a variety of backgrounds and skill levels (everything from ESL students to perfectly proficient seniors at Ivy League institutions). I specialize in reading comprehension and speed, proofreading, essay writing (especially college application essays), preparing students for the SAT, creative writing (fiction & poetry), the research essay, and other genres.

Before beginning our lessons, I offer a free consultation meeting so that I can get to know the student and what he/she would like to improve on. I am available to tutor during the daytime and some evening/weekend hours, and we will determine the frequency and duration of these lessons at this time. After each lesson, I assign homework based on the material we covered that day, which I expect to be completed in a timely manner. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy for classes, but I do offer makeup classes, which we will schedule on an individual basis. I challenge my students to take ownership of their learning, and I want this to be a collaborative process that will help them navigate information and articulate themselves so that they can be successful in their individual endeavors.

I graduated cum laude from Duke University with a BA in English and violin performance. My undergraduate thesis received the Louis J. Budd Award for Outstanding Work in American Literature, and my poems received the Academy of American Poets’ Prize. Since then, I have been awarded my Master's in English from the University of Pennsylvania and am in the process of completing my PhD here. My research areas of specialty are Asian American studies, new media, and sound studies.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
