About Andrew

I have a passion for science and for science education! My faculty, mentors, students, and friends all agree that I have a talent for teaching. Students need to be engaged to get the best out of the their learning experience and I believe that learning should be fun. Emotional salience is important for memory formation. I believe that if students understand concepts and feel free to talk their way through difficult problems, they will develop a deeper understanding that translates to skilled test-taking and earning desired grades. If you are simply going through the motions of memorization or spinning your wheels with the same descriptions, it is time for a new approach! I like to discover students' strengths and weaknesses, and then I tailor my tutoring based on what I have learned about them. I don't believe that all students should be approached with a cookie-cutter method. If you are looking for someone with whom you can take your time and talk through problems, look no further. I will make sure we remain focused and that material is understood before we move on. I hope to learn with you in the near future!

I received my undergraduate degree (BA) in Neuroscience from the University of Delaware. After college I worked for two years at a contract research organization in a molecular biology department and I also worked for one year as a laboratory technician in a behavioral neuroscience lab. I went on to receive my master's degree (MS) in Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience at Delaware State University. I am currently working towards my PhD at Drexel University in the Molecular and Cellular Biology and Genetics program. My current research focuses on nerve regeneration. I also volunteer for an annual science awareness group called Pint of Science, of which I am a founding member of the Philadelphia chapter. We gather local scientists who are conducting fascinating research and bring them to local bars and restaurants in the Philadelphia area to talk to non-scientists about their work. I love sharing science with people!

If you are looking for someone who won't intimidate you, who doesn't believe in stupid questions, who loves education, and who is patient, look no further! I have a great amount of science knowledge that I am eager to share. I currently tutor graduate students at Drexel University and I provide a seminar for Neuroscience graduate students titled, "Axon Guidance" which focuses on how the axons of brain cells (neurons) move and find their targets. I have the experience and I promise to make things interesting!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I am currently a PhD student in the Molecular and Cellular Biology and Genetics program at Drexel University. I have an MS in Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience and an interdepartmental BA in Biology and Psychology. I also have two years work experience as an industry scientist in a molecular biology lab. He Knows How To Teach — Andrew's enthusiasm and ability to make complex scientific concepts simple are amazing. Our ADHD teen has been struggling with Honors Biology. Andrew got him excited about it, showed him ways to remember based on how our son learns. "I wish he was my regular teacher, Mom! I took a quiz and remembered everything he told me!" We are thrilled and he can't wait to work with Andrew again. ...
