About Dawud

I am an Associate of the U.S. based Society of Actuaries and have been a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, with nearly thirty years of professional actuarial experience in the field of pensions, life insurance, and health insurance. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and have spent several years in a secondary career as a high school mathematics instructor and private tutor.

My love for math has informed my belief that each student can succeed and that my job as a “math coach” is to assist each student to develop a tutoring plan that fits the student’s individual academic needs, which clarifies learning challenges, improves study skills, introduces test-taking strategies/”short-cuts”, and aligns overall goals to gain the requisite self-confidence crucial for success.

Every student can overcome "math anxiety" and my approach is to help students capitalize on their strengths associated with their individual learning styles.

Winning is an attitude! Contact me and let me show you how to develop that "can do" confidence needed to become a much better math student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

As I near my 57th birthday, I have almost 50 years experience with algebra. I earned my bachelor's degree in math 35 years ago and went on to become a professional actuary, with now more than 30 years in this field. I've taught math to middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adult learners, including SAT/ACT test preparation.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 builds on the foundation established in the Algebra 1 course. Often difficulties arise when presented with the advanced topics in Algebra 2, due to weaknesses in the Algebra 1 foundation.

With my unique approach to identifying and learning how to overcome challenges, I strive to empower each student with confidence building self-esteem; the real key to success in math!

Geometry

Understanding is overrated and high school geometry can be so confusing! An appreciation of these two maxims is my unique starting point approach in tutoring high school geometry. Understanding is a process and many geometry students believe that without complete understanding of a theorem, postulate, corollary, or concept at first pass they're doomed. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Confidence building is infectious; it's the key to success. Contact me to allow me the opportunity to help your son or daughter 'unlock the mystery' in learning high school geometry.

Prealgebra

Competency in general math (also called pre-algebra) stands as the barometer for which one can gauge future success in both algebra 1 and algebra 2. It's therefore of paramount importance for students to have a solid foundation of understanding pre-algebra's basic topics and concepts.

With my unique approach to identifying and learning how to overcome challenges, I strive to empower each student with confidence building self-esteem; the real key to success in math!

SAT Math

In the last 30 years I've worked with thousands of students in large group programs, small groups, as well as private SAT/ACT tutoring for individual students. My unique approach as an SAT math coach is to help each student develop his or her own "game plan" that capitalizes on strengths, acknowledges weaknesses, and how to strike the right balance between knowledge of basic concepts, pertinent formulae, and test-taking tips.
