About Matija

To WyzAnt users,

I am currently entering my second semester as a post-baccalaureate student of classical languages at the University of Pennsylvania, having graduated in June of 2015 with a B.A. in classics from William College, where my coursework mainly oriented around classics, philosophy and religion, especially the history and ideas thereof, and the German language. Prior to college, I attended a High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in NYC, from which I hold a Chancellor's Endorsed Diploma in the Arts: Music, and where my music studies oriented around performance and culminated with a 5 on the music theory A.P. examinations. I also studied classical music performance and composition in Mannes The New School for Music Preparatory Division. I studied French throughout middle and high school, culminating in a passing grade on the A.P. examinations, and I attended the New York Art Students' League as well as the New York Academy of Art throughout my time living in New York, where I studied perspective, anatomy, painting, and sculpting.
I am eager to meet you and help you in whatever capacity I can as a passionate student of languages, music, and visual art.

All best,

Matthew

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I received a B.A. in classics from Williams College in June of 2015, having successfully completed the requisite number of relevant coursework. During college I studied Latin and Greek. I am currently enrolled in a classics post-baccalaureate program at UPenn.

Drawing

My visual art training started at a very early age, under the supervision of my aunt, who is a professionally-trained painter and sculptor. I went on to attend classes in perspective, anatomy, and draftsmanship at the Art Students' League of New York and the New York Academy of Art. I also attended the New York State Summer School of the Arts, among a handful of other programs over the years.

Painting

My training in oil-painting started fairly early and I have built up a standing portfolio of oil portraits over the years in a representational and realistic style that exhibits my ability to capture the subject's character while retaining its realism. At the New York Academy of Art, I studied sculpting with Cynthia Eardley and Academic Figure Drawing and Painting with Michael Smith. At the Art Students’ League, I studied Painting from Life, Portraiture, Composition with Leonid Gerwits.
I received the University of the State of New York Education Department Certificate of Commendation in recognition of meritorious achievement at the 2008 School of Visual Arts of the NY State Summer School of the Arts and The Gold Key for Excellence in Visual Arts, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2007.
