About Tim

10+ years of teaching have made me believe that all people are capable of learning, and that each person learns differently. Every teacher can have success with a learner in one tutoring session, but can every tutor teach in a way that lasts beyond the tutoring session? I offer tutoring services that adapt to the needs of each student so that learning can continue beyond the session.

Some students need visuals, others something tactile, and others something else entirely. I’ll observe closely to find out what works for each student. I’ll also gather information from all parties - student, parent, teacher, and tutor – so that everyone’s input is taken into account. I’ll then use this information to meet each student exactly where he/she is in the learning process. I’ll push them to make discoveries instead of always offering a one-time tip or trick (though those do sometimes have great value!). I don’t always believe in quick fixes or that a few sessions of tutoring will solve everything. Instead, I believe in helping students discover where they are in the learning process and then using their strengths to help them succeed.

If I'm working with children, I consistently share details of our sessions with parents, and encourage parents to learn new teaching skills themselves! Having been a teacher for 10 years, I can honestly say that parents are THE most important person when it comes to a child's progress. Parents, if you're willing to take just a few minutes with me before or after each session, and then support our work with your child, lasting results will come sooner than you expect!

I currently or have recently tutored elementary age children in Math, Reading, and Writing, and I’m willing to work with middle school students, too. In all cases, I've tried to find out what works best for each child and family, as each situation has been unique. I also recently taught at a local graduate school in their school of education, teaching prospective and new teachers as they prepare for careers in the educational field. Finally, I recently completed some part-time work where I reviewed and screened resumes, applications, and essays for a school district.

Prior to becoming a tutor last year, I taught third grade for 10 years at an elementary school in Philadelphia. Here is a list of programs and skills that I am qualified to teach. I am adaptable and ready for exposure to new programs, so if there’s something you need that’s not on this list, we can still talk:

READING
•Decoding
•Fluency
•Comprehension of both fiction and nonfiction texts

MATH
•GoMath!
•Everyday Math
•New Common Core problem-solving strategies

WRITING
Editing (grammar, punctuation, organization)
• Narrative style (i.e. – students writing their own realistic fiction stories)
• Informational style (i.e. - How-to’s, descriptive pieces)
• Persuasive style (i.e. - persuasive essays)
• Grammar (i.e. - sentence structure, commas, apostrophes, and contractions)
Spelling
• Words Their Way (a spelling program that focuses on spelling patterns and rules, rather than
memorization)

I would also be comfortable with tutoring students in Science and Social Studies. I have an ability to explain concepts by using analogies, metaphors, and examples that give students a new window into understanding.

I do hope that you’ll consider me when looking for a tutor for yourself or your child. If you or your child want to enjoy learning and build confidence for future learning, send me a message!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I recently completed my 10th year of teaching in an elementary classroom in Philadelphia. I have a Master's of Education degree from Drexel University, and a bachelor's degree (Human Development and Family Studies) from Penn State University. Besides my years as a teacher, I taught in other settings with a variety of ages from 6-15.

Elementary Math

I taught math for 10 years in an elementary school. I have over 7 years of experience with the Everyday Math curriculum and over 2 years of experience with the GoMath! curriculum. I developed simple ways of assessing my students and assisting them if they were lacking skills.

Handwriting

As a 3rd grade teacher, I taught students how to write in cursive. Beginning with some very simple and fun warmup activities, I introduced students to the similarities and differences between regular print and cursive handwriting. I then taught letters with similar strokes together. I first modeled, and then had students practice.

Reading

For 10 years, I worked with developing readers. I worked with students who were struggling with sounds, fluency, and comprehension. I am familiar with what different learners need at different stages of their reading development.

Study Skills

After completing my Master's Degree In Elementary Education, I taught 3rd grade for 10 years. I have been tutoring since September of 2015. Both jobs have exposed me to an extremely wide array of students who learn in different ways; therefore, I know that a teacher must be adaptable to each student in terms of how to teach study skills. With that said, there are some basics to follow when teaching study skills - having a long term goal in mind and breaking it down into short-term goals and to-do's, recognizing a student's strengths and using those to address weaknesses, and having reliable "go-to's" (i.e. - mnemonic devices) that a student can always refer back to.

Writing

I have taught a wide variety of writing lessons during my 10 years of teaching. I've taught children how to write fiction stories, persuasive essays, and how to write in an informative style. I also co-wrote grammar units for teaching in my classroom.
