About Marlene

I have been teaching English and English as a Second Language continuously for fifteen years, with most of my focus on ESL. This has been at private universities, colleges, and companies. My experience includes all levels of ESL from beginner to advanced, covering all aspects of oral communication (speaking, listening, impromptu and prepared speeches, presentations); writing (sentence formation and syntax, paragraphs, essays, resume preparation, and research papers); reading (oral reading, main ideas, inferential and deductive reasoning, paraphrasing, summarizing, novels); grammar (all levels); vocabulary and idioms; and U.S. history and culture (for ESL students).

I have also taught interpersonal skills and career preparation, including interviewing techniques, to technical students and international students. Not only have I taught small to large classes in university and college settings, but I have tutored individuals one-on-on, in pairs, and in small groups of three or four.

I have prepared and conducted level testing, including CASAS testing. In addition, I have taught preparation for TOEIC and TOEFL tests to non-native speakers of English. Also, I have created additional courses to meet student needs. Two examples of this would be a new oral communication course I created for lower level students and a Friday afternoon get together for students of all levels to learn, share, do projects, and play interactive games together. Note that I completed a criminal and background check, fingerprinting, and sexual abuse clearance last year and again in March of this year (now good for three years) in order to teach students under eighteen years of age.

My teaching style is persistent and thoughtful in explaining points; that is, I am patient until there is comprehension on the part of students. I am very friendly, and I allow students to speak and ask questions as much as they desire and can. I am well versed in all points of English and can relate well to different personalities. I try to determine the needs of each student as much as possible. I am positive, uplifting, and always try to give credit for effort as well as success in completing a task.

My schedule is relatively open daytime afternoons for the spring and weekend afternoons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I am in my eighth year of teaching courses in oral communication at Montgomery County Community College, and my Saturday course has run continuously since 2007; in addition, I taught speaking and listening at Eastern University for five years consecutively and at Alvernia University for almost four years. I tutored professionals in speaking in singles and pairs for Inlingua School of Languages and Translation beginning in June of 2005. Also, my English and Communication courses at DPT Business School and CHI Institute included speaking components. All of this is on my resume. My students have included young and middle-aged adults: undergraduates, graduates, and professionals alike. My technique is to teach pronunciation, intonation, and presentation skills (to include both extemporaneous and prepared presentations). Informally, I emphasize interpersonal conversation and discussion (including active listening) to improve fluency with practice based on utilization of base materials.
