About Hannah

I'm currently an ESL teacher in New Jersey for first and second grade students. I have taught middle school and elementary students, and I have tutored children, teens and adults. I enjoy tutoring in ESL, English, Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Social Studies. I received my Masters in Social Studies education from Rutgers University and I received my certification to teach ESL from Penn State University. I speak Spanish, and basic Portuguese, and a bit of Hebrew. I love learning new languages!

When tutoring , I like to work together with students to set goals, track progress and celebrate achievements. It's important for students to take the initiative in their own education in one way or another, at a level that is comfortable for them. I believe in understanding rather than memorization, and conversation rather than correction. Every student learns differently, and part of educating is figuring out how each student learns best.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I have been a social studies teacher in NJ public schools for 6 years. I have taught American Civics for all 6 years to 7th grade students, and in the past I student taught American history to 8th graders. I have also tutored World History at the 8th grade level. I am certified by the state of NJ and PA as a highly qualified Social Studies K-12 teacher.

Study Skills

I have been a 7th grade teacher for the past six years, and have often incorporated study skills into my lessons to help my students succeed. The key with helping students developing their study skills is understanding that every student differs in regards to which strategies works best. Some students benefit from developing their written organizational strategies (creating outlines or charts). Other students need manipulatives such as student-created flash cards. Still others need help identifying the main ideas in a unit, so as not to attempt to study every single detail. Teaching study skills is about empowering students to learn on their own.

Great tutor that is worth your trust

Hannah has a great personality, and she is so confident in teaching English. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who needs help in writing specifically, and in English generally.
