About Ben

Hello my name is Ben. I am currently a PhD student in the Drexel University math department; I also hold a masters in Electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University. I have taught pre-calculus, calculus, and linear algebra. In addition, I have tutored high school level math and physics throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area. My tutoring experience extends to collegiate level math as well: I have tutored students on the topics of probability, statistics, financial mathematics, ordinary differential equations, and partial differential equations. I've also helped friends with physics and chemistry many times.

I find that one of the most important parts of learning anything in math and science is realizing that the steps that take you from question to answer really do make sense. I have seen many students try to memorize example after example without ever understanding the steps behind the process, only to stumble when they run into something unfamiliar. Conversely, the students that do the best are almost always those that feel comfortable enough with the methodology to take steps apart so that they can understand how and where they fit together. In teaching, I always encourage students to strive to that level. I try very hard not to teach like a "broken record"; if something isn't making sense to a student, then we'll try to look at the problem from a more familiar angle.

Thanks for reading. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Electrical Engineering

I have a masters degree from Johns Hopkins in Electrical Engineering. I am particularly handy in the mathematically heavy areas of Electrical engineering such as signals/signal processing, system/control theory, circuits, and electromagnetism. Besides my knowledge of the material, I also have plenty of experience teaching/tutoring (mostly in math).

Linear Algebra

I have taken Linear Algebra both as an undergraduate and graduate student in mathematics. I have also taught a course in Linear Algebra. As a PhD student, my primary area of research is Linear Algebra. All together, my knowledge of the material and experience teaching it make me an excellent tutor in the subject.
