About Eric

I'm a former English teacher returning to school to become a medical doctor. I've taught Shakespeare to high schoolers and intensive premedical science to adult learners. My real joy is helping high school students master new concepts. Unlike most tutors, I'm able to provide instruction in both the sciences and the humanities, and can empathize with the challenges specific to each discipline. I see academic weaknesses in the context of other strengths, and have the ability to connect new ideas to material your child already understands.

I specialize in all middle and high school subjects (English, History, Math, Statistics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics) and their associated national examinations (AP, SAT II, IB) as well as preparation for the SAT, ACT, and ISEE/SSAT/SHSAT. I also provide advising and support for the college process, particularly the personal essay. My unique combination of personal writing instruction, familiarity with professional editorial standards, and experience on both sides of the interview table can help any application shine. For college students applying to medical school, I offer advising and editing for the AMCAS application.

I grew up on the Delaware River, just north of Philadelphia, and attend medical school at the University of Pennsylvania on a full merit scholarship. I graduated from Yale in 2010 with a BA in English, earning honors and distinction. At my graduation, I received the Clapp Fellowship, Yale's largest financial prize, which supported a year of writing and travel. Before teaching literature at a private school in Connecticut, I was employed in the editorial office at the New York Review of Books. I've spent the last two years at the post-bac program at Goucher College, first as a student (where I completed all premedical science requirements in one year) and then as a full-time Teaching Fellow for Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics. I have also completed additional coursework in advanced chemistry and statistics.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child achieve his or her goals!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
