About Noah

Hi! My name is Noah, and I think that I could be a great tutor to your child. I have been in education for six years now, having first started as an instructor and residency advisor at Exploration Summer Programs at Yale. During my two summers at Explo, I taught a variety of courses that explored literary and artistic expression, including detective fiction and film, the poetry of hip-hop, and creative writing.

My teaching career began in 2012 when I joined Teach For America, a non-profit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap between under-served communities and those of high affluence. I was a corps member in Glendale, Arizona, and taught 7th grade writing and social studies for two years. Following my tenure with Teach for America, I taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade social studies at a charter school in Washington, D.C.

In addition to my classroom experience, my career in education has taken me into curriculum development, namely for the Summer Learning Collaborative, a non-profit based in Wilmington, Delaware dedicated to combating summer learning loss amongst students growing up in under-served communities. In November, I will take on the position of Curriculum Director with Summer Learning Collab.

I believe that great writers are most oftentimes great readers; they use texts that they admire as models for their own writing. In helping students write clearly, we will also read model texts to help attune both their eyes and ears to key elements that will strengthen their own work. Additionally, we devote ample time to mechanics and grammar to help reinforce they skills they are picking up through imitation and routine practice. Read; write; revise; dance; repeat. That's the regimen that turns good writers into great writers. I look forward to seeing your child or student transform into the writer of their greatest potential.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

I am pursuing a MFA, Program For Writers at Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, NC. July 2013-July 2015 (In progress). Over the course of a semester, I produced creative and critical work in cycles that end with a submission to a supervisor every three weeks; there are six cycles per semester. For each submission, packets typically contain three new poems, three revised poems, three critical essays, and a cover letter. With each subsequent cycle, I responded to feedback from their supervisors to help improve my writing.

I am pursuing a teaching certification from Rio Salado College Teacher-in-Residence Program, Phoenix, AZ. I took four classes per semester to attain teaching certificate in the State of Arizona.

I hold a BA from the University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y., Class of 2012. My major was English with a concentration in creative writing. For my English honors program, I researched Emily Dickinson’s and Frank Bidart’s use of punctuation in fastening a voice to the page, and writing a creative thesis of a group of 20 poems. In spring semester of 2011, I attended advanced studies in England to study English literature.

I was a part of the Exploration Senior Summer Program as an instructor and residential adviser during the Summers 2010 and 2011. On the Yale campus in New Haven, I developed and taught these courses to U.S. and international students in preparation for college: Personal Expression of the Beats and Hippies, Creative Writing, Poetry of Hip Hop, and Pulp: Noir Culture. I supervised a dormitory of 25 students. I taught two classes per day and provided support for residents from early morning to late at night. Developed original curricula over three months during the spring while balancing schoolwork and other responsibilities.

I worked as a personal tutor for the College of Literature and Writing during the Summer of 2011. I was presented with a variety of writing assignments in which an undergraduate students needed assistance developing, organizing, and articulating responses to a range of literary works. I helped the student complete between 10-15 writing assignments required in order to pass classes.
