About Amanda

I am a fourth year PhD student at the University of Southern California working on my dissertation in analytic philosophy, but currently spending my year and a half on fellowship in Philadelphia, PA.
I have an extensive variety of teaching experience: teaching my own introduction to logic class, TAing for 5 philosophy courses including intro, history, and logic, tutoring over 30 hours of philosophy through Wyzant, tutoring logic, philosophy, and linguistics at the college level for several years, TAing several college courses, assistant teaching special education with middle-schoolers (ADHD, ADD, Aspberger's, Autism, CD), and serving as the head teacher in an educational summer program for 1st and 2nd graders.

My greatest strengths as a tutor are my patience and my critical thinking skills that help me explain concepts clearly and concisely in ways that are accessible (much of what we learn to do in philosophy is just that!)
I have a great passion for helping students understand philosophy, but also double-majored in English with an emphasis in writing in college, and I have an eye for proofreading, grammar, and polished writing!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Logic

I am working on a PhD in analytic philosophy, of which logic is a fundamental part- and I have done coursework in more advanced logic such as modal logic and metalogic. I have designed and taught my own Introduction to Logic course, have been a TA for an Introduction to Logic course, and have tutored logic one-on-one for many years.

Philosophy

I am a fourth year PhD student in Philosophy at the University of Southern California. I have a BA with honors in philosophy, and have taken additional graduate level coursework at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Temple University. I have TA-ed as well as taught my own philosophy classes.

Terrific Tutor! — Amanda is a terrific tutor! She tutored my son for a college level course with very difficult course material. She was responsive, patient, knowledgeable, very easy to work with, and took a real interest in my son's successful completion of the course. She had a thorough understanding of the course materials. She was also incredibly flexible, making herself available as needed, including outs ...
