About Jessi

Hello, prospective students! I'm Jessi Huntenburg, a compassionate, effective tutor of the language arts. I have nearly four years and 2,000+ hours of tutoring experience, and I am excited to share my comprehensive knowledge of the language arts with you.

When I volunteered with The Center for Literacy in 2012, my passion for tutoring was born. Soon after, I became a clinician with Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, a renowned leader in the field of reading remediation. For the past year, I've been a dorm tutor for Chinese high school students with International Education Opportunities, an experience that's allowed me to tutor everything from ESL to Biology. As a result, I'm highly adaptable in terms of subject matter, and tackle learning with a inter-disciplinary approach.

Although I am well-versed in many subjects, I am an "Essay Guru". With my guidance, students routinely improve their expository writing scores by three letter grades. The collaborative way in which I approach instruction is highly valued by all of my students, and I bring a lightness to my sessions without sacrificing professionalism. In other words, my students aren't afraid to laugh! I am able to suspend their fears so that they can effectively engage with subject matter, an ability that's priceless when it comes to overall improvement in subject comprehension.

Thank you for considering me as your or your child's tutor. I promise that I will make the language arts less daunting, and dare I say it--fun! Good luck on your search, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a Pennsylvania state certified English teacher, grades 7-12. I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in English, and have over 360 hours of high school level English teaching experience. Additionally, I have 10 months experience as a reading remediation clinician, averaging 20-40 hours a week.

ESL/ESOL

I am an ESL/academic tutor for International Education Opportunities, an organization that supports native Chinese students as they study at American High Schools. Additionally, I have tutored ESL students independently for the past four years. Most notably, I helped a native Arabic speaker with minimal English language skills transition to an intermediate level within six months.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in English with a concentration in Critical Theory. I hold a PA Instructional I Certificate in English, grades 7-12, and I have five years and 2000+ hours of English tutoring experience.

Reading

I have 96 hours of experience as a reading mentor with the Philadelphia chapter of Hope Worldwide. I have ten months experience as a Clinician with Lindamood-Bell Learning Practices, the preeminent private reading remediation center in the US. I have provided intensive reading remediation to students ages 6-55 with a number diagnoses, including dyslexia, hyperlexia, autism, pervasive developmental disorder, ADD, ADHD, and chronic anxiety. I am capable of identifying both symbolic and visualization-based reading disorders, and develop specialized plans according to each students' specific needs.

Vocabulary

As a reading remediation clinician, ESL tutor, and English teacher, I have provided vocabulary instruction to students in myriad ways. These include, but are not limited to flash card generation, contextual sentence generation, and incorporated verbal reinforcement. My vocabulary instruction is normally integrated with a reading remediation lesson plan, but can be taught in isolation as well. I am a Pennsylvania state certified English teacher, grades 7-12.
