About Jessi

Perhaps you're a solid student who just can't get the hang of this "writing" thing. Perhaps you finish a chapter of text only to realize that you have no idea what you just read, let alone how to apply it to essays and exams. Perhaps academic writing is Greek to you, or if you do understand it, you're having trouble expressing your ideas in a concise and organized way. Or perhaps you're a decent reader, writer, and researcher, but you'd like to take your skills to the next level. Whatever your literature-related need, I'm confidently competent, experienced, and here to help.

As an undergraduate at Temple University, I tutored two students on their writing skills for four years, helping them improve their persuasive and expository writing scores by two letter grades. As a student teacher, I spent ten hours a week helping seniors prepare research papers for the judgment of a graduation committee, and each student who sought my assistance passed. And as a tutor for International Education Opportunities, I assist up to six students with essay drafting simultaneously, generally improving each student's scores by at least one letter grade. In other words, I'm familiar with the elements of a strong, sound essay, and can help you achieve this level of writing proficiency.

Additionally, I am an experienced reading tutor. As a volunteer for The Center for Literacy, I helped an adult, low-level English language learner achieve conversational and literary proficiency within six months. As a clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes, I helped a diverse body of students improve their reading abilities by as much as six grade levels in as little as eight weeks. I've developed a holistic instruction method that improves reading comprehension at the most basic to the most advanced levels, and will work to move you towards independence as we progress with our sessions.

Our sessions can focus on developing writing and reading skills independently or in conjunction with one another; it all depends on which areas in which you wish to gain greater proficiency. Regardless, all instruction will be fun, dynamic, and student-centered, and I can promise a measurable improvement in your academic performance after working with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am a Pennsylvania state certified English teacher, grades 7-12. I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in English, and have over 360 hours of high school level English teaching experience. Additionally, I have 10 months experience as a reading remediation clinician, averaging 20-40 hours a week.

ESL/ESOL

I spent two hours each week for six months teaching a Moroccan immigrant with beginner language skills how to speak proficient English. When we began our sessions, he was able to greet, order food, and answer negatively or affirmatively in English, and his writing skills were basic to non-existent. He had never read a book in English before. By the end of our sessions, he was able to navigate the subway system, answer questions regarding his family, nationality, religion, and occupation, and was able to read fluently at a third grade reading level. I am a Pennsylvania state certified English teacher, grades 7-12. I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in English

Grammar

I am proficient in identifying the parts of speech, diagramming/deconstructing sentences, and editing persuasive/research-based documents so that they are in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style as well as MLA format. Additionally, I am intimately familiar with the grammatical components of words, such as common affixes and their combinations. I am a Pennsylvania state certified English teacher, grades 7-12. I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in English

Literature

I graduated with a 4.0 GPA in literature from Temple University. My knowledge of the canon is extensive; British literature, modern and Romantic poetry, and American modernism are its base. I received a score of 710 on the Literature GRE, have 360 hours of high school English teaching experience, and have provided one-on-one literature tutoring to approximately ten students aged 14-20.

Proofreading

As a college student, I was an editor of a campus literary magazine. I have proofread an estimated total of 40 academic papers for students ranging in age from eleven to twenty-five; I proofread for grammatical errors as well as compliance with the MLA Handbook and Chicago Manual of Style. I have an innate ability to detect syntactical and grammatical errors; I can tell when a sentence "doesn't sound right" and am able to correct even the most obscure errors. I am a Pennsylvania state certified English teacher, grades 7-12. I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in English

Reading

I have 96 hours of experience as a reading mentor with the Philadelphia chapter of Hope Worldwide. I have ten months experience as a Clinician with Lindamood-Bell Learning Practices, the preeminent private reading remediation center in the US. I have provided intensive reading remediation to students ages 6-55 with a number diagnoses, including dyslexia, hyperlexia, autism, pervasive developmental disorder, ADD, ADHD, and chronic anxiety. I am capable of identifying both symbolic and visualization-based reading disorders, and develop specialized plans according to each students' specific needs.

Vocabulary

As a reading remediation clinician, ESL tutor, and English teacher, I have provided vocabulary instruction to students in myriad ways. These include, but are not limited to flash card generation, contextual sentence generation, and incorporated verbal reinforcement. My vocabulary instruction is normally integrated with a reading remediation lesson plan, but can be taught in isolation as well. I am a Pennsylvania state certified English teacher, grades 7-12. I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in English

Writing

I teach two main types of writing: research and persuasive. I guide students through the processes of brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and citing, paying close attention to the elements of organization and expression. I advise those with the most basic to advanced skill sets, providing fundamental frameworks to the former and the building blocks of mature linguistic expression to the latter. I have experience in advising elementary to collegiate level students, and guarantee at least one letter grade improvement following the administration of my services.
