Hello, and thank you for taking the time to review my profile! My name is Rebecca and I am originally from the Philadelphia area. I graduated with honors from La Salle University in 2011 with a Bachelor’s degree in secondary education and Italian. I currently work in a small business setting full time while taking courses toward my graduate degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. This program also prepares me to complete my ESL certification.
I have had various ESL teaching experiences. During college, I took two trips to Tanzania where I taught ESL. This experience in particular gave me valuable insight on the various needs of students. I rarely had the help of a translator and was forced to be creative in reaching my students who spoke primarily Swahili, of which I knew little. This was one of the most difficult but rewarding privileges and my teaching skills, lesson planning, and adaptability improved immensely. Today I continue to draw upon the skills I acquired while teaching abroad in Tanzania.
Throughout my undergraduate student teaching experience, I was readily able to plan lessons using various teaching strategies and available resources to differentiate my lessons in order to reach my students and address their diverse needs. I successfully reached high academic goals which I set for myself, and continue to do the same in my graduate courses.
In addition to working with children in Tanzania, I have had experience teaching adult ESL students in a one-on-one setting. I assessed my students’ needs based on their levels of communication in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and developed individual lesson plans to fit their goals. I worked mainly with native Japanese speakers and very much enjoyed watching them progress over time. It was a privilege to work with adults and help them with specific requests such as improving communication in everyday settings of their apartment building or the grocery store. It was an honor to help one of my students communicate better with her son’s teachers and even help her prepare for her son’s birthday activity with his pre-school class.
I hold my students to high expectations and find creative ways to reach them no matter what level they may be. Thank you for your time and please contact me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you! Hello, and thank you for taking the time to review my profile! My name is Rebecca and I am originally from the Philadelphia area. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
