University of Pennsylvania (English)
University of Oregon (Master's)
I have taught in both classroom and one-on-one environments with students in high school, college, and graduate school. Regardless of the setting, the subject, or the level of instruction, my goal remains the same: I strive to motivate and inspire students to discover a learning style that will facilitate their academic growth and success. I value and respect the incredible variety of personalities that I encounter while teaching, and I greatly enjoy meeting students from various backgrounds. I understand that each student deserves specialized consideration in order to succeed, and I happily adapt my teaching methods to best meet their individual needs.
My teaching expertise lies in helping students develop strong communication skills. I have successfully taught reading comprehension, grammar, rhetoric, literature (poetry and fiction), and writing. I encourage students to incorporate their own personal interests into our discussions because I believe that the study of language is not merely a memorization task; rather, in the exploration of reading and writing, students discover and refine their own voices.
Education and Teaching Experience:
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in English. I also hold an MA in English from the University of Oregon.
At the University of Oregon, I tutored in the undergraduate writing center, served as a teaching assistant in the literature department, and taught my own writing courses. Prior to my teaching experience at the University of Oregon, I tutored English and SAT prep for middle and high school students in the Philadelphia area.

Julia M. was extremely professional, patient, and knew EXACTLY how to assist me with my Music Therapy Board Certification Exam. She customized a study plan for my learning needs in an easy and concise manner. Julia M. is a very positive teacher, she targets the area of needs and strengths in a session and future sessions. I am very fortunate that she is my tutor and WyzAnt is very fortunate to have Julia M.!
Julia helps me to focus. She is an excellent tutor with some plans already made before the lesson, which facilitates the learning process. Having had a difficult period, therefore it was very hard to concentrate, her compassion and skills together gave me the opportunity to rebuild my confidence. She has a good structure to deal with the barriers of English, which is not my first language.
Thank you Julia!!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Julia M. passed a background check on 1/14/14. The check was ordered by Julia through First Advantage. For more information, please review the background check information page.
After sending a message to Julia, you will be able to order a new background check for $7.99. As part of your tutor selection process, we encourage you to run updated background checks. Please also review the safety tips for hiring tutors.
