Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I taught a course in the college application essay for several years.
I did research into what colleges were looking for in the college essay and learned that they are looking for something outside the box. They are wanting a unique idea. I helped students take their life experiences and turn the ordinary into a unique idea. Most of my students got into the program of their choice.

Social Studies

I taught Social Studies as part of a coordinated English and Social Studies curriculum for thirteen years. This Social Studies curriculum was for eighth grade at a private school in Merion Pa. I also tutored my step-daughter in Social Studies, a subject she had difficulty with in seventh grade, but she ended up doing very well. I used the SQ3R reading method to help her read/study and master the material.

Study Skills

I taught middle school for thirteen years and high school English for over twenty years. In that role, I taught study skills, particularly to middle school students. I have a PhD in Reading, Writing and Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania and used that background to show students how to read textbooks using the SQ3R reading method. It's a useful tool for studying and being able to ace exams. I taught students how to keep assignment books and to apportion their time for studying. In the past, I tutored students in study skills when I had my own tutoring business.
