About Ramona

I am a 25+ years veteran teacher. I have taught various subjects to students from Kindergarten through high school. Since 2007, I have had the pleasure of teaching GED courses to youth aged 16-24. This experience has confirmed that those who actually make the decision to learn are those who improve the most and at a faster rate.

Professional positions that have preceded my GED teaching career have included self-contained classrooms as well as specialty subjects such as math, science, history, art and music. I have found that math classes have been the most rewarding. This is the subject in which most students have very little self-confidence, However, levels of math are logically progressive and students are able to immediately track their progress yielding higher self esteem. My statement to each class, throughout the years, has always been, "I am here to show you how much you already know!" It will remain the same for each future student!

I would be more than happy to share my expertise with those in need of a little extra "push", or those needing a "full dive" into a discipline. Regardless of the subject area, I believe that each student (child, youth or adult), is capable of success in any area that he/she chooses.

Thanking you in advance,
Ms. Ramona

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Because of my experience as an elementary teacher, I am very resolute about recognizing rules and following them. Algebra 1 is loaded with rules and steps to follow. This eliminates the need for guessing and (in some cases) reasoning. Although reasoning is a valuable skill, it gives way to the application of rules designed for specific usage. Recognizing when to use either comes with practice.

Elementary Math

I am a believer in the process of "rote" learning to build a foundation. This simply uses repetition and recall. Once the foundation of math is established, its meaning and logic become clearer making it a little less "scary" for a learner. He/she becomes familiar with the possibilities and usually invites challenges. This "I wonder what would happen if..." mentality is a teacher's true desire for his/her students.

GED

Teaching GED courses over the last 8 years has been very rewarding. I am able to help students recognize just where they are and plot the path to where they need to go. Because the GED Test is so very encompassing, students tend to become overwhelmed. I help them to break down each subject and identify their strengths and weaknesses in those areas. They are generally very happy with realizing how much they already know!

Prealgebra

Because of my experience as an elementary teacher, I am very resolute about recognizing rules and following them. In math, once a basic foundation is laid, there are very explicit rules to follow. This tends to eliminate the need for guessing and (in some cases) reasoning. Although reasoning is a valuable skill, it gives way to the application of rules designed for specific usage. Recognizing when to use either comes with practice.
