About Michael

Hi, I'm Michael, a first year Master's student at the Drexel University College of Medicine. I have my Bachelor's from the University of South Carolina in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (minor in Classical Studies), with Honors from the Honors College. My course work for my undergrad degree included general biology and chemistry, organic chemistry, cell biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, genetics and genomics, physical chemistry, Virgil, and Horace.

I have a year's experience as a college-level Biology, Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry tutor. In addition, I have four years worth of experience volunteering with children of all ages, so I work well with all age groups. I am located in the Roxborough/Manayunk area and am available for late afternoon/evenings and weekends.

I believe that simplicity is the key to understanding. If you can't explain something in a manner so clear that a fifth grader can understand it, then you don't understand the subject as well as you could. This is evident in my teaching, which frequently utilizes analogies and real world examples to help students understand difficult concepts.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biochemistry

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3.893 GPA, magna cum laude, with Honors from the South Carolina Honors College).

Biology

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3.893 GPA, magna cum laude, with Honors from the South Carolina Honors College). For this major, I took many Biology courses, including General Biology, Fundamental Genetics, Cell Biology, Human Genetics, Cancer Biology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Chemistry

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3.893 GPA, magna cum laude, with Honors from the South Carolina Honors College). As part of this degree, I have taken both Honors Principles of Chemistry I and II, receiving an A in both. In addition, I have taken Quantitative Analysis, Physical Chemistry, and Physical Biochemistry.

Classics

In undergrad, I minored in Classical Studies with a focus in Latin. For my minor, I took courses in Roman Art History, Classical Mythology, Literature in Translation, Virgil, Horace, and Modern Interpretations of Ancient Rome (specifically Ancient Rome in film). My final minor GPA was 3.83.

Elementary Science

As a science major, I have a fairly detailed understanding of all the general principles of science. Since these are the same principles taught in every elementary science class, I feel qualified to teach them.

Genetics

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3.893 GPA, magna cum laude, with Honors from the South Carolina Honors College). I have taken courses in both fundamental (general, multi-organism) genetics and human genetics (as it relates to medicine). I am skilled with a variety of DNA technology, such as DNA isolation, bacterial colony isolation and culture, PCR, gel electrophoresis, agarose plug preparation and digestion, and bacterial plasmid isolation.

Latin

In high school, I took Latin I through III, and received an A in all three. I also was a teacher assistant for several Latin I courses, which involved me answering any questions students asked me. In college, I placed into Latin 321 (Virgil), in which I received an A. In addition, I have taken high level coursework in the works of Horace.

Organic Chemistry

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3.893 GPA, magna cum laude, with Honors from the South Carolina Honors College). As part of this degree, I have taken both honors-level Organic Chemistry I and II (receiving an A and B+, respectively). I have served as an organic chemistry tutor in the past, tutoring student athletes in Organic I. On the section of the MCAT containing organic chemistry, I scored a 130 out of 132.

Physical Science

I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (3.893 GPA, magna cum laude, with Honors from the South Carolina Honors College). As part of my major, I performed well in several chemistry and physics courses, the typical components of a class in physical science.

He knows what he is talking about

He explains things until I get it. I think that all you ever want out of a tutoring session. I plan to use him until my class is over. I feel more comfortable taking the course knowing I have this type of support. I'm more confident and ready to take on this challenge!
