In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor dyslexic students because of the time I spent teaching in the resource room of a Jr. High school special needs department. I worked with several dyslexic students on their reading and reading comprehension. I also have read extensively on the subject and have incorporated methods (especially phonic) in my tutoring.
I have a masters of education in elementary education. In studying for my master's, I took classes in elementary and higher math. I student taught 5th grade (all subjects including math), and I also taught math k-9th grade at Huntington Learning Center. As a teacher in the special education department at Edgartown School, I supported students in math class and with small group tutorials.
I am qualified to tutor phonics because during my graduate studies in Elementary Education we studied a program called "Words Their Way," which highlighted phonics study. I also tutored using "Explode the Code" at Huntington Learning Center. "Explode the Code" is a phonics-based workbook program.
