Tutoring is a great opportunity to work one-on-one with a teacher who will allow you to learn at your own pace. My teaching philosophy is that all students have a "success level" that they can reach with the right guidance and support. I have worked in the classroom with college students for over fifteen years, but my most rewarding experiences have always been in individualized sessions and conferences. I treat each student as an individual with a unique thinking process and learning style. I consider myself as both a scribe that helps students with getting their thoughts on paper and something of a literary “midwife” that helps give birth to an idea and a thought process along with the student. I will come up with a plan to help you learn at your own pace but still improve your performance in class writing assignments and on standardized tests. I tutor in all subjects related to reading and writing.
I currently teach writing at University of the Sciences and have a PhD in English Literature from Temple University (2010), and am a professional writer with publications in academic journals. I tutor college students and also high school and middle school students in my spare time because I love the subject and want to help kids in the community succeed in college or become college-ready. I can help students with standardized tests such as the reading portion SAT and ACT, as well as with the LSAT. I provide students with extra books and other materials as needed.
I have also worked with PhD students as a professional editor and proofreader. Below is a statement posted from one of my student-clients:
"She is thorough with a quick turnaround and assisted me with writing style, grammar and content evaluation. Janina is very personable, professional, and will work with your individual needs and timeline,"a PhD Candidate at the University of the Sciences Tutoring is a great opportunity to work one-on-one with a teacher who will allow you to learn at your own pace. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Since I teach college, I am aware of college preparedness standards. I have worked with colleagues at Holy Family University on interpreting this test, and with students who did not do as well as they could have on it. I will teach you all the test-taking strategies needed and can explain those tricky questions when it comes down to two ambiguous choices.
If you need help with those tough reading passages, I have the expertise to show you how to comprehend them. I am a professional reader and reviewer of academic books, and I know how these passages are chosen for tests like the ACT. In a month or two, I will show you how to be a proficient reader for this exam.
If you need help in an English class with reading, vocabulary or writing papers, I can offer over fifteen years of experience teaching such courses. I enjoy helping students write papers and develop their thoughts. I will take the time to read together with students in order to analyze a piece of writing.
Teaching grammar can be fun! I use a variety of exercises to help students learn the basics of punctuation and sentence structure. We watch videos and sing songs so that students can remember the rules with less efforts when they write. I do have a background in linguistics, which helps to explain common problem areas such as prepositions and articles.
I have been studying literature for most of my life, and received a PhD in English from Temple University in 2010. I have a number of publications in the history of the novel, on subjects such as minor characters and plots.
I have worked as an editor for a number of journals, and taught my college students grammar and proofing skills for many years. I go slowly with proofreading with the children I tutor, always letting them know that this is the last stage of the writing process.
I read for a living, and have expertise in reading and analyzing stories, particularly novels. I also regularly review books for an academic journal.
I teach reading skills as a professor in my first year writing and literature courses at Holy Family University. I have the expertise to help students with the most difficult kinds of questions that they will encounter on this test since I know what the makers of those tests--people in the education field--are looking for.
Writing is my area of expertise since I have been teaching college writing for the past fifteen years. I can come up with a clear plan for each student for how to go about organizing one's thoughts quickly and effectively.
If you need help with putting your thoughts on paper and organizing them, I can offer over 15 years of experience as a writing instructor. I am a professional writer with a number of published academic articles and reviews. I regularly work with students one-on-one, and I believe that this kind of mentoring is the best way to improve students' writing.
