Penn State University (Japanese)
Hello all (^^), I am a bilingual Speaker of Japanese currently studying in my final year at Pennsylvania State University. Before recently returning to Philadelphia, I studied for three years at Ibaraki University in Japan with intensive focus on Japanese language and culture and received a certificate recognizing my completion of the program. I have been a heritage speaker of both English and Japanese since I was a child and through Ibaraki University's Japanese language program I became proficient in reading and writing Japanese as well. I have experience tutoring both Japanese and ESL during my time in Japan and at Penn State Main Campus. I have even designed and taught a beginner's Japanese course as a project for my Second Language Acquisition Class in the previous fall semester at Penn State and I have the opportunity to teach ESL at the University level as well during the previous fall semester at Penn State as well.
My approach to language teaching is simple, WE MUST HAVE FUN! IT IS A PRIORITY! Having fun while learning about a new language and culture keeps things fresh, interesting and exciting which is just what is needed to balance out the frustration that can sometimes come along with learning a new language. I am here to help you take those first big steps in you language learning, and whether you are a beginner looking for a fun way to build a solid foundation, or an experienced learner looking for a conversation partner, I am here to support you all the way.
I am able and willing to tutor students in a variety of different subjects ranging from pronunciation and conversation, to reading, writing (including Kanji) and grammar. Or if you just need a conversation partner, I'm here for you as well. While my specialty is Japanese, I am also able and willing to tutor in ESL as well. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
