About Amanpreet

Hi, I am Aman. I am a librarian and technology tutor who likes to spend free time learning for fun. I graduated with my Master of Library and Information Science.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education with a minor in Engineering Studies. In college, I visited groups of youth in daycare centers, elementary/secondary schools, and college/university classrooms. I even had the chance to teach high school students at a leadership-oriented boarding school in Indonesia as my final course before graduating with my BS.

Shortly after graduation, I became certified to teach in middle and high schools. Instead of teaching in a traditional setting, I joined the AmeriCorps. During my service year, I taught and tutored hundreds of adolescent and adult learners in a public library and aided in other service initiatives.

I like to personalize my lesson plans and tutoring sessions to meet the needs of the students in my sessions. I like to experiment with incorporating technology, visual aids, and teaching styles and particularly enjoy coaching students who are preparing for exams and capstone projects. I am passionate about education and would like to share the power of knowledge with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education. During practicums, I did develop and teach career development lessons to secondary school students. I also was a teaching assistant for first-year student orientation courses at a university.

Chess

I taught a couple of middle schoolers how to play chess, when I was a summer camp counselor. They enjoyed the game. I would like to teach others how to play chess too.

College Counseling

I was an admission recruiter for my university for 2 years. I served as a college residential adviser for 2.5 years and an adolescent camp residential advisor for 2 summers at my university. I also co-taught freshman orientation courses.

Cooking

I taught Food Preparation courses at middle and high school settings in Iowa. I also have taken Food Science classes at a university.

CSS

I learned HTML & CSS together through online and in-person classes. I have created websites through templates and through original code. I have also helped my classmates debug code for class projects. This past winter, I tutored a web design student in both HTML and CSS. The student was able to design an aesthetically pleasing website as a final project.

Homeschool

As a certified middle/high school teacher, I understand the curriculum used in public schools. As a tutor and an academic librarian, I know to customize lessons and demonstrations to meet an individual student's needs. The combination of these two areas will make an effective homeschool tutor for students who receive a non-traditional education and still need to prove competency in a standardized curriculum.

IELTS

In college, I taught high school students in Indonesia using a curriculum developed by Cambridge, who also developed the IELTS. As an AmeriCorps member, I taught adult English classes. My students were preparing for a variety of exams that tested English language skills. I can help students interested in preparing for the IELTS with test-taking strategies.

JavaScript

I took online JavaScript courses and a graduate level Information Technology class in which I used JavaScript to code partial and entire webpages. I helped my classmates in person and online with these projects too. I can continue offering personalized lessons in JavaScript.

Macintosh

I grew up using Mac computer. I started using Mac computers in elementary school. I have taught adults how to use Mac computers in the past.

Microsoft Access

As a Library and Information Science professional, I have taken classes on databases and understand how to organize information. I learned how to use Microsoft Access as a teenager. I can teach those who are interested in learning how to use Microsoft Access and give advice on how to organize a database.

Microsoft Outlook

I started using Microsoft Outlook for work emails in 2010. I can teach others how to use Microsoft Outlook and its many features. As a library assistant, I taught people how to create and use email accounts at the reference desk.

Microsoft Windows

I have been using Microsoft Windows since I was a child. I have used every version from Windows 98 to Windows 8. I have played around with Windows 10. During my AmeriCorps year, I tutored students who used Windows computers.

PHP

I took a graduate level Information Technology course in which I used PHP to code partial and entire webpages for class projects. I also helped my fellow classmates grasp concepts within PHP and helped them debug their code. I can continue to tutor others in PHP.

R

I am currently taking the Swirl class to learn R. My colleagues and I have helped each other learn various concepts. I can also help students interested in R by helping them through the Swirl class.

Study Skills

During high school and college, I taught basic study skills to my friends and eventually orientation classes. Now, I am an AmeriCorps member who teaches adult English and GED classes. I teach my GED students study skills that will help them prepare for their GED tests.

TOEFL

As a current AmeriCorps member, I teach adult English and GED classes at a local city library. I have helped one of my students find resources about the TOEFL. During college, I also had several friends who told me about the TOEFL exam.

USCIS

As an AmeriCorps member, I used the USCIS curriculum in my Beginning English and Social Studies classes for adults seeking to learn English and prepare for the citizenship test. I am familiar with the free resources available for the citizenship test on the USCIS website and quiz students on the questions. I can quiz students preparing for the USCIS test using the flashcards and other materials provided on the website.

Web Design

I have designed websites using coding skills that I have learned formally and informally. I have experience using TextWrangler, Fugu, Google Sites, and Wordpress. I have played around with Filezilla, Dreamweaver, and Wix. I took a Master's level Information Technology course as well as online coding classes to better understand how to make websites. I can share my knowledge of web design with others through tutoring. I am active in Meetup groups and participate in web design-related professional development opportunities.
