For 37 years, I taught grades 7-12, mainly Geometry and Algebra 2. My lessons have always included math history, math vocabulary, and plenty of fun. I am patient and thorough, but also demanding of hard work and excellence to the extent possible for each individual student. Though many parents dreaded learning math and have often passed down a fear and intimidation of the subject, my goal is for all children under my tutelage to be able to say, years later, "I really enjoyed math!" He is a good teacher. very patient, makes maths as simple as it can be. he explained geometry in a simplistic way.
Jerry's tutoring skills helped my son through a rough patch that he was having with Algebra. Jerry is trustworthy, which is very important to me when inviting someone into my home to work with my children. He is extremely knowledgeable in Algebra, and he is a kind, respectful and pleasant gentleman. My son was comfortable with him and benefited from his expertise. I would definitely hire Jerry again should the need arise.
We are very thankful that Wyzant connected us to Jerry. He is patient, pleasant and my kids love him for their Bar Mitzvah tutor. Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed working with Jerry. He is very patient and never rushed me. Jerry gave me several hints on how to apply my lesson. I highly recommend him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra I provides a formal development of the algebraic skills and concepts necessary for students to succeed in advanced courses. In particular, I can assist in understanding the use of algebraic skills in a wide range of problem-solving situations. Topics include, but are not limited to: (1) operations with real numbers, (2) linear equations and inequalities, (3) relations and functions, (4) polynomials, (5) algebraic fractions, and (6) nonlinear equations.
When I taught Algebra 2, I would take my students across the street to McDonald's and measure 3 points on the huge arch and show that it is a parabola. Creativity, practical applications, and fun are my trademarks.
As my students would always say, "Geometry really is EVERYWHERE". It's not just formulas for area and volume, but the appreciation of how shapes form our entire world. why bees make hexagonal honeycombs and where the words "square" and "trapezoid" originate. Additionally, it makes you think more logically and efficiently! It's my favorite subject.
I have a Hebrew teaching certificate from the Commonwealth of PA Department of Education. My teaching includes 30 years of supplementary Hebrew school, educational director of a Conservative synagogue for 11 years, a Bachelor of Hebrew Literature, and a Master of Jewish Education from Gratz College.
Besides taking several linear algebra courses at Temple University for my BS in Math Ed and master's in Math Ed, I taught HS math for 37 years. That included many years of teaching Alg 2, which includes units on Linear Algebra.
A course in Pre-Algebra reinforces mathematical skills taught in the younger grades, with additional advanced computation including an emphasis on Algebraic concepts. Students study fractions, decimals, percents, positive and negative integers and rational numbers. They will become more proficient in using ratios, proportions and solving algebraic equations. I have my students develop and expand problem solving skills (creatively and analytically) in order to solve real-world problems, using manipulatives and calculators. Successful completion of this course prepares students for success in Algebra 1.
