About Lesley

I am a professional writer, journalist and poet who has found tutoring to help others improve their mastery of reading, writing and literature among my most fulfilling work.

My teaching philosophy is simple: Each student is unique and deserves my full attention to their needs.
I work diligently but joyfully to help each student learn to study: to apply herself or himself to whatever subject they have come to me to for.
Learning is above all, a matter of attention. With the right match of mentor and student, learning is energizing, empowering, addictive, and fun!

I currently teach privately and in a non-profit writers' house; my previous experience includes private boarding schools at middle to high school levels. I have also taught undergraduates and adult learners. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College, and a B.M., piano, from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins, and there have been several other fellowships and educational awards.

Finding the right tutor for your needs involves personal chemistry as much as expertise. Please contact me with questions and for a free consult.

Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taught English essay writing workshops for several years at Muse House Center for Literary Arts, completed my MFA for Writers Program at Warren Wilson College; been employed full-time as a journalist for Knight-Ridder Newspapers for more than 13 years. I have also taught subjects that required writing in two private schools in New England.

English

I can tutor English composition, literature, poetry, fiction, essays, creative non-fiction, music history and cultural history.

Grammar

I am experienced in all aspects of writing, which includes more than the basics of good grammar. In addition to many years as a professional journalist, I have tutored remedial middle-schoolers and advanced high school students in the elements of writing. Additionally my private workshops in creative writing (poetry, fiction, nonfiction) stress a mastering of basic grammar and vocabulary.

An excellent thought muddled by poor grammar confuses the reader: defeating the writer's intention.

Good writing is good thinking. The ability to clarify one's thoughts and express them on the page is in large part due to proper use of grammar and vocabulary.

Literature

I am a graduate of the MFA Program for Writers of Warren Wilson College; have been an arts journalist and critic for many years. I tutor students of all ages, remedial to honors. Literature, creative and non-fiction writing, poetry, English composition are specialties.

Music History

I am a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music of Johns Hopkins University. My B.M., piano performance involved a rigorous program of music theory, performance and history. I further received a full scholarship to UNC, Chapel Hill in musicology. And for nearly 2 and a half decades I was classical music critic of two major Knight-Ridder Newspapers, full-time positions that necessitated a degree of knowledge both of music performance and cultural, music history. My music and arts reviews have also been published in national newspapers and on the NPR radio stations, including WRTI, 90. 1 FM in Philadelphia.

Proofreading

I am a seasoned journalist and creative writing instructor. At several of the national publications I have written for, my duties included proof-reading. As a graduate of the Warren Wilson Program for Writers, it was expected that I master all aspects of grammar and style including the strictures of the MLA (Modern Language Association).

I am able to proofread academic and business copy and the work of remedial or honors' students.

SAT Reading

I am a seasoned journalist, critic, and instructor of creative writing, all of which have required mastery of reading. My MFA from Warren Wilson's Program for Writers reinforced the necessity of reading and understanding all genres of literature. For good writing requires acute reading skills. I can help students of all ages understand and enjoy more fluency in their reading, a skill that can open the heart and the minds to invaluable experience, infinite adventure.

Vocabulary

My education and experience as a journalist, poet, and creative writing teacher have prepared me to tutor vocabulary one of a writer's most important craft elements. It is impossible to write well in any form or genre without knowing a word's meaning, why it is being chosen, and its proper usage within a sentence.

I have experience tutoring K-3 in reading and writing, which of course includes vocabulary. I am a writing instructor bot both remedial and Honors high school students. I also lead creative writing workshops in poetry and nonfiction for college students and older adults. The method I use for these workshops is based on the MFA Program for Writers.

Writing

I have been a professional writer for over three decades.

First as a journalist and arts writer for major national newspapers; later as a freelance author and private instructor of creative writing. For the past six years I have tutored college students, preparing their English essays among other subjects. And I am a reading and writing tutor ( K-3) in an urban school in South Philadelphia. I am also the journalism and creative writing instructor for the YMCA's Young Achievers program. I am proud to have students (of all ages and levels) tell me that our work together gives them more confidence and brings pleasure.
