About Charles

After graduating Brandeis university with a dual degree in Biology and Political Science, I went on to work for nearly two years at Brandeis as a molecular biologist doing bacterial genetics in a biochemistry and biophysics lab. I transitioned to the Genomics Platform at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, where I had the privilege of doing high throughput genome sequencing in the home of the human genome project; I even got to work on the Ebola project for the most recent epidemic in Africa! I then moved to New York, and after working in Immunology and the microbiome at the Weill Cornell Medical College, I have recently moved to Philadelphia to begin a PhD in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis.

The take away:

1. I love science. I love biology. I love learning. This informs how I teach. I am so excited to be in a position to help others learn to enjoy the subject as much as I do.

2. I have a broad array of experience, with good depth and breadth of knowledge. What I can promise you is that I have been through the learning process itself many times over as a student and a professional, and have honed a skillset that emphasizes retention, understanding, and above all practical relevance!

The number one difficulty my students have is that the material, especially in biology or chemistry, is very hard to visualize and apply practically. That is why I learn the material with the student, rather than pontificating it back at them. I'm here to guide students to a personalized, self motivated understanding of the topic. I want my students experience the wonder of the natural world in a deeper and more meaningful way. My goal is for my students not only to ace each exam because they have to, but because the subject is also fascinating and fun for them!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

After graduating Brandeis university with a dual degree in Biology and Political Science, I went on to work for nearly two years at Brandeis as a molecular biologist doing bacterial genetics in a biochemistry and biophysics lab. I transitioned to the Genomics Platform at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, where I had the privilege of doing high throughput genome sequencing in the home of the human genome project; I even got to work on the Ebola project for the most recent epidemic in Africa! I then worked at the Weill Cornell Medical College, where I completed two years of research in immunology and the microbiome, with a first author paper pending. I am currently a PhD student at Thomas Jefferson University, specializing in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis.

Chemistry

Because chemistry is a fundamental part of all biological interaction, I have more than a decade of experience doing chemistry as a student, teacher, and professional scientist. I teach the abstract concepts of chemistry to my students using a verbal, conceptual style that emphasizes the connection between every day events students experience and analogs at the chemical level.

Fantastic Tutor!

Charlie is a fantastic tutor. Having a limited science background entering a competitive post-baccalaureate program, I needed some chemistry help fast, and he's delivered. He has a great way of explaining imposing scientific concepts that textbooks just can't, is responsive, relatable, and doesn't waste time. Learning with Charlie is pleasant and he clearly has a genuine passion for the subject ma
