Temple University (journalism, poli sci)
I went to Central High in Philadelphia. I earned my bachelor's degree in Political Science and News Editorial Journalism at Temple University. I'm currently an MBA candidate at Drexel University with a concentration in Finance. I work full-time in non-profit management/development.
I've worked for an international test prep corporation for three years teaching small classes as well as tutoring individual students in the SAT and ACT. I've always scored relatively high on standardized tests and I enjoy making the studying and application processes less daunting for students who are motivated to succeed. I can give thorough and candid advice on navigating the administrative side of college as a whole; essentially long term self-assessment for career decision making at the earliest point at which it is vital to be competitive and aware of available resources.
An education in Journalism afforded me indispensable technical abilities of graphic design. I regularly use Adobe software like Illustrator or InDesign at work. I am able to teach introductory lessons on the essentials for those even completely new to design software.
Particularly, I enjoy speaking to the benefits and broad transferability of a business education, the entrepreneurial spirit, the social aspects of work and leadership, the essentials of financial literacy, and first-time home buying. My undergraduate background was primarily rooted in social research with a strong emphasis on effective writing skills, technical, persuasive, or creative. I would identify more as a creative, intuitive, and social personality. Finance is something of a second life as I understand the impact of early financial literacy, but I work harder to understand the nuts and bolts related to analyzing numbers and data.
Though I am not limited to any specific topics or age group, subjects I focus on the SAT or GMAT, especially with the verbal sections. I enjoy helping with general study skills and time/career management, even with students who identify with unique struggles. My ideal role would be a long-term tutor for general homework help, study skills, and student career management. I'm quite open to conversation or questions about consulting in anything unmentioned. Above all, I do believe that patience, understanding, and building a procedure based on individual needs is the most conducive to effective learning and information retention. And of course, fun. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a southern Vietnamese city with a large population of Cantonese-speaking Chinese migrants. Growing up, my family spoke strictly Chinese. I was put into a private institution to learn to read and write in Mandarin. I attended Central High School, a highly competitive magnet school in Philadelphia, which happened to be the only high school to offer Chinese. I took it for 2 years there. I still speak Chinese daily with my family.
I scored a 680 on my GMAT, currently enrolled in an MBA program at Drexel University.
I have a degree in political science from Temple University.
I have an extensive background in effective writing.
