With thirteen years classroom teaching experience, I have the knowledge, techniques, and skills to help you become a better student. I am easy to work with, but am demanding when it comes to your effort.
I specialize in writing instruction. More than helping you correct writing errors you might have made, I will show you new and better ways to think about your work, from formulating a thesis or controlling idea, to paragraph structure, to having a plan for an entire piece of writing. Great writing comes from attention to detail on all levels, and I can help you learn more about those levels, and give you specific tools to improve the clarity of your expression.
I also have extensive experience working with standardized test preparation: SSAT, PSAT, SAT, and PSSA. We will work on not only content knowledge, but knowledge of the test and test-taking skills.
In addition, I have taught pre-algebra and algebra, and have a practical, problem-solving approach to teaching math that is nonetheless rooted in math fundamentals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a former teacher and current professional photographer, I have not only the content knowledge of image manipulation programs such as Lightroom 3, Photoshop CS5, and GIMP, but also the teaching background that allows me to work effectively with learners of widely varying ages and abilities. I recognize that each student is unique, and requires a unique approach to instruction.
Like any subject, knowing how to use Photoshop well begins with knowledge of the basic tools in the program, and the simplest methods of image manipulation such as levels, saturation, and color balance. After those skills are learned, more complex tasks such as layer masking, compositing, and using filters can be undertaken, and a photographer can begin to learn how the digital darkroom can be used to maximize style, expression, and content.
I am a professional photographer in Philadelphia who also has thirteen years of experience in secondary education. My photography experience covers a number of areas, including portraits, events, food, landscape, and travel work. I am most familiar with Nikon cameras, but the basics of photography are the same no matter what you are shooting with.
I can help you out with the most basic photography skills such as learning about exposure and composition, or advanced skills such as HDR photography, making composite images, using long exposures, using advanced flash features, etc. I am also proficient in Lightroom and Photoshop, so we can talk about photo editing. Lessons will consist of lots of shooting and lots of interaction.
