About Andrew

I am a lawyer who is passionate about teaching and helping all students achieve their full potential through a creative and fun learning environment tailored to each individual student. I graduated from Temple University with dual majors in Journalism and Spanish and recently obtained my law degree. I am young and have an energetic teaching style that keeps students engaged.

As for experience, I have tutored private individuals and small groups for over 16 years. I enjoy working with students of all levels. For example, I have instructed elementary school students on techniques to improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, along with syntax/phonics , vocabulary, and punctuation. I also have experience tutoring high school students in various subjects, including English, Spanish, and U.S. and World History. At the college level, I have tutored students and adults in English, Spanish, and basic/intermediate computer skills. In addition, I have helped law students improve their legal analysis and exam-taking techniques and strengthen their legal writing and public-speaking skills.

Over the years, I have helped students of all ages customize effective time-management skills, study habits, and organizational skills needed to succeed.
My students have achieved great results. Their test scores and GPAs have improved. They genuinely understand the material better. They feel more comfortable participating in class. Perhaps most importantly, they feel more confident in their own abilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

In this economy, polished career development skills are more crucial than ever. However, keeping up with changing norms can be a daunting task. As a recent law school graduate and a lawyer, I have been on numerous job interviews for various types of positions and submitted multiple types of resumes and cover letters—each tailored to the particular position for which I was applying. I have also written several successful admissions essays and scholarship essays. The key is focusing on being creative and making your personality and qualifications stand out from the competition. Below is a list of the key skills I have refined over the years to enhance my own career development:

• Resume writing to get the hiring committee’s attention
• Modern resume formatting and style—tailored to the profession according to research in the target field
• Crafting an exceptional cover letter that succinctly summarizes/highlights relevant skills and accomplishments, while demonstrating excellent writing ability
• Researching and preparing for job interviews
• Creating and maintaining a list of professional references
• Strategizing and compiling writing samples (or other portfolios)
Public speaking and presentation skills—including being succinct, persuasive and memorable, through poise and a natural delivery style
• Strategically choosing the proper internship, externship, or position to help you get to the next point in your career
• Evaluating higher learning opportunities and trainings to build the substantive skills in your field needed to move to the next level
• Brainstorming, structuring, writing and revising successful admissions and scholarships essays; searching and applying for scholarship opportunities for which you may be eligible
• Using social media (Facebook, Linkedin, etc.) to market yourself, expand your professional network, and find job opportunities
• Thank-you letter etiquette: how to write them and when to send them

As a lawyer and recent law school graduate, I have coached law school students in honing the skills mentioned above and am happy to report they have all improved in many of the areas listed. Moreover, many of them have successfully obtained the positions they sought. As a judicial law clerk, I have also interviewed multiple candidates, reviewed countless resumes and cover letters, and know what impresses employers and how a candidate can distinguish himself/herself. I am confident that my professional training and experience, as well as my tutoring experience, have equipped me with the skills needed to teach you how to enhance your career development skills through a fun, inventive, and practical learning environment.

ESL/ESOL

I am passionate about helping others learn English and feel comfortable communicating in English. I am a native English-speaker and have experience teaching English and Spanish, especially to both adolescents and adults. I am confident I would be a successful ESL instructor for you for several reasons.

First, I have extensive teaching experience. For example, I first began teaching in 1996 when I tutored private individuals and conducted small classes in Hebrew reading and pronunciation for over ten years. In 2006, I graduated from Temple University with dual majors in Journalism and Spanish. As part of my Spanish degree, I learned first-hand the challenges of learning a new language and helpful techniques for reducing such impediments. I studied abroad in Mexico, Spain, and Puerto Rico, engaging in several language and cultural immersion certificate programs. I also participated in a language-tandem exchange, in which I taught English to a middle-aged man from South America, while he helped me with my Spanish comprehension. Similarly, I tutored elderly Russian immigrants in basic English and civics to help them prepare for their citizenship exam. All of these experiences have taught me to be patient and always put myself in the place of the non-native speaker who is trying to learn to comfortably use a new language. This, in turn, helps me better anticipate potential stumbling blocks and strategies to overcome them.

Second, I am passionate about teaching. I began tutoring at a relatively young age, and felt personally rewarded when my students would grasp a new concept, or demonstrate that they felt more confident in their own abilities. That rewarding nature of teaching has always stayed with me. For instance, although I began teaching nearly thirteen years ago, I am still as passionate as ever, having recently finished instructing various groups of law students to improve their essay exam writing, strengthen their technical legal writing, and hone their public speaking skills. I approach teaching language skills in a fun, comfortable, and practical environment to put students at ease and improve learning capacity and retention.

Finally, I have technical training and experience in language translation that would make me a uniquely skilled English/ESL tutor. I have taken an upper-level course in business and professional translation, as well as a course in socio-linguistics. Over the past five years, I have also translated numerous documents for various entities—including small businesses, community organizations, and large corporations—and have served as a translator in a civil legal clinic.

For all these reasons, I am confident I would be a successful English/ESL tutor for you.

General Computer

I am an area tutor with experience tutoring both adolescent and adult students in computer basics and internet usage. I have tutored several students in computer skills and usage over the years, and have been tutoring students for over 13 years. I am well-versed in general internet navigation, emailing, web/boolean searching, understanding and proficiently using social media such as Facebook and Linkedin. I am also-well versed in software. For example, while in college, I took courses in using Word and Excel for business, basic web-design and photo-editing using FrontPage and Photoshop, respectively. In the past, I have also instructed students on computer usage basics--from using Windows, to file saving and storage, computer maintenance, and uploading/managing/editing digital photos. I have also helped people establish customized spreadsheets to manage their finances, expenditures, and other cataloging needs which lend themselves to spreadsheeting and charting. Furthermore, as a lawyer, I use Word every day, all-day. My job requires that I am comfortable with many of Word’s more advanced features.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is an essential skill for succeeding in any career, and more generally, for succeeding in life. A gifted public speaker can captivate an audience's attention to achieve a strategic goal and do so in a charismatic and natural way. Once individuals learn the basics of public speaking, they can boost their performance in various settings—from students who need to make an oral presentation in class, business professionals pitching a proposal, to a job applicant seeking to impress interviewers.

As a lawyer, I am uniquely qualified to help students become effective public speakers. My job requires that I practice effective, persuasive public speaking each day. I must converse with attorneys and judges multiple times a day. I also observe other attorneys arguing in court before judges. Oral advocacy is crucial to being a successful attorney. In law school, I learned how to succinctly, confidently, and persuasively present my points clearly. I have tutored law students on methods to improve their oral advocacy and presentation skills. I have also tutored adolescents on how to deliver speeches, make impromptu audience addresses, and even sing in public. I am confident that my professional training and tutoring experience have equipped me with the skills needed to teach you how to become an effective public speaker through a fun and inventive learning environment.

SAT Reading

I specialize in tutoring the Reading / Writing / Verbal sections of the SAT and ACT. I also have years of experience tutoring many students to prepare for various tests, from multiple choice and essay exams in school, to the SAT, ACT, and LSAT.

In fact, I am currently tutoring another high school junior in the Reading / Writing / Verbal sections of the SAT and ACT. I also just finished tutoring five students on the SAT Reading and Writing sections, with particular emphasis on reading comprehension and essay writing. I scored very high in the SAT and GRE reading / verbal / writing sections and really specialize in those areas.

I am also tutoring several students in writing, English grammar, and ESL. As a lawyer, I must read and write complex documents daily, which helps me think about the mechanics of writing so I can more easily break down those concepts for my students.

Importantly, I am passionate about helping other people learn to be more comfortable in the skills mentioned above. Although I cannot guarantee results, I can say that many of my students have improved their performance and scores on their respective exams, and have also felt more confident in their abilities. Also, because I specialize in the reading, vocabulary, and writing portions of the SAT and ACT, I do not tutor the math sections.

I tailor my lessons to the unique learning needs of each of my students and look forward to helping you improve your SAT scores, too!

Study Skills

Study skills are a specialty of mine. I have had to perfect my study skills for a variety of topics and settings: from college journalism and language courses to law school, and even two Bar Exams to become a licensed attorney. I have taken more exams in my life than anyone would like to remember. Through these experiences, I have developed tried and true techniques for improving study skills, retention of highly technical and specific information, and test performance. I have also spent a great deal of time studying the various methodologies for improving study skills, time management, organization, and test-taking techniques. I thoroughly enjoy sharing this knowledge with others to make it as easy as possible for them to learn the substantive material they are trying to understand and improve their test performance.

These are skills that I have taught to the majority of my students over the years. For example, as an Academic Fellow in law school, I tutored other law students in time-management, test-taking strategies, and ways to improve their writing and analysis. I have also helped many of my current students with similar techniques. My experience has taught me that there are several methods for achieving the desired goals, and the trick identifying those methods for students and helping them figure out which techniques work best for them.

Truly one of the best tutors! — During my first year of law school, I sought Andrew as my tutor to help me with my substantive classes and oral argument skills. He tailored his lessons based on my own learning style and was very methodical in explaining complex subject matter in a very understandable way. For instance, because I am a visual learner, Andrew provided me with visual aids to help me understand the concepts. Unlike m ...
