About Carolanne

I have a lot more availability this summer to help keep you or your child on track in reading and writing over the summer break. I have experience working with children in grades k-6 as well as adult learners. I will work to identify students' strengths along with the areas in which improvement is needed and create lessons that are fun and engaging. Please contact me soon if you are looking for a summer tutor.

I completed my M.S.Ed. at the University of Pennsylvania in the Reading, Writing and Literacy program in January 2012 and currently hold a k-12 Reading Specialist certification.

I graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 2007, where I majored in English and minored in Linguistics. I am knowledgeable about English literature, as well as grammar, and expository writing techniques. I am a patient educator, and make sure my students understand the material before moving on. Because of my Linguistics background I have a good understanding of grammatical patterns and am able to use different approaches and find what works best for individuals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I received my BA in English from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2007 and am knowledgeable in the study of literature, writing and English grammar. I've been a lifelong reader/writer and also minored in Linguistics as an undergraduate student so I have a strong interest in language/literacy.

Phonics

As an undergraduate student I minored in Linguistics, studying phonetics, language acquisition, syntax, and other nuances of grammar. In graduate school I studied reading development, which included strategies and skills in phonics. I am a certified k-12 Reading Specialist in the state of Pennsylvania.

Proofreading

I have a good deal of experience proofreading my own papers and collaborating with classmates/ colleagues in graduate school. I have a solid understanding of English grammar and writing standards.

Reading

I received my Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in January 2012 in their Reading/Writing/Literacy program. I am familiar with effective techniques to help struggling readers (especially young readers) and have taken classes in adult literacy.
