About Patricia

I believe that every student - of any age - can learn even the most difficult material, no matter how complicated or difficult it may seem at first. Starting with things you already know, I'll help you master the new ideas and concepts you need to do well with your computer, succeed in your classes or excel at your job. I am patient and willing to go over materials many times in different ways, to be sure you really learn what you want to know.

As your tutor I will study your personal learning style and develop tutoring plans and approaches to the materials you are studying that are centered on the way you learn best. We'll go at your pace, and you'll end each session feeling confident and ready for the next book, problem, or classroom challenge.

Choose me to tutor you in using your computer, mastering difficult concepts and theories in art history and its philosophy, and for the theory underpinning material culture study and analysis. I also tutor students in the craft of historical research, skills and methods needed for undergraduate and graduate-level research in American history and art history.

I have both a PhD and Masters degree in the humanities, and many years of experience teaching adults in informal settings, and young adults in the college classroom and the museum gallery. I especially enjoy personal tutoring and the flexibility of one-on-one instruction. I find real satisfaction from watching my students grow and gain confidence. You will find our work together will be positive and productive -- and we'll both enjoy the pleasure of your accomplishments. Come learn with me!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I believe that every student can learn even the most difficult material, no matter how incomprehensible it may seem at first. Starting with things you already know, I'll help you master the new ideas and concepts you need to do well in your classes or job.

General Computer

Computers can be mystifying, and sometimes frustrating, when you haven't yet learned the skills to use them, maintain them, and access class resources and research information with them (and don't forget that professors often require students to submit their assignments online!) If this is how you feel, let me help you master these skills so necessary to your academic success!

Professors usually expect students to have a great degree of ability and familiarity with computers - sometimes much more familiarity than students actually have. I'm a professor of undergraduate students, and I've seen for myself that many entering students (of any age) are not as familiar or comfortable with computers or "technology" as they need to be. Without these skills, students are at a loss as to how to access and use "Blackboard" or other online course management tools critical for class success.

Students may know how to email and update their Facebook status, but may not have much experience with software like Microsoft Word, Access, or Excel. Or maybe they can use software, but not feel confident about installing it, or updating the versions they have. And what about routine computer maintenance chores(such as "Disk Cleanup" or "Defragment" on PCs)and antivirus and firewall utilities?

Using computers to do research online is another area students may need extra help with learning. Finding college/university library sites and accessing library databases and other resources online, using search engines to access information for research topics, and sorting useful and "good" web site sources from potentially harmful or "untrustworthy" web information -- all are important "computer skills" that students may need a helping hand to master.

Do any of these issues fit your needs? If so, let me help you build a solid foundation for using online resources for your class research, installing/uninstalling and using productivity software and peripherals (cameras, external hard drives, etc.) and doing routine computer maintenance. As a professor, I've used course management systems (like "BlackBoard") for my classes, and know how to help my students get everything they need from their course's online components. As to online research -- I earned my Ph.D. in part by doing effective and useful online research for my graduate school papers and dissertation. I use the internet daily for research on the web and through the resources of college and university libraries. And I've been using, debugging, and upgrading my own desktop, laptop, and netbook computers since my first computer purchase in 1990 (!).

We'll work at your pace, and I'll teach you in the way you personally learn best. You will learn what you need to know to use computers successfully to do your course work and to access resources online for research (and fun!) I'm looking forward to the opportunity to share these skills with you.
