About Rachel

As an experienced teacher, I love to learn, whether it's in a certain subject or a focus on how to best serve my students, but I also appreciate that everyone learns in a unique way, and it is my goal as a teacher to not only help them learn according to their strengths, but also to inspire them to become independent, life-long learners.

In my 8 years of teaching, I have had the opportunity to teach music, Spanish K-12, middle school and upper level math, physics, religion, and essay writing. Although I have not actively taught it in the classroom, I have also tutored in German, history, and literature.

In math, I focus on middle school math, including pre-algebra and algebra I, in order to help build strong number sense and basic algebraic skills that are the building blocks for all upper level math courses. I also tutor in some upper level math courses, such as Algebra II, Geometry, and Trigonometry.

I am fluent in German, Italian, and Spanish and have taught foreign language for 7 years, and I recognize that second languages can be one of the most difficult courses, especially with the strong focus on grammar, so I focus on grammatical comprehension, not only in the target language but also in English, which ultimately will help them transfer their skills to other foreign languages. I also focus on oral skills and also listening skills.

As a tutor, I have both short and long-term goals for my students. My greatest long-term goal is to help the student become an independent learner, so not only to focus on the specific subject, but also to help them develop study skills that they can transfer to other courses and content. For each individual session, we also will come up with a plan before our next session to always ensure that we are moving forward.

I am generally available for tutoring Monday-Friday from 3PM-9PM and occasionally on weekends, and I am happy to travel to my students or find a central meeting location. I charge $50/hour for in-person sessions, but I also am available for online or over-the-phone sessions, which is $40/hour.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping your child achieve success inside and outside of the classroom!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I took many Jewish studies courses in college and am currently working on my Master's in Theology from Saint Mary Seminary in Cleveland, OH. I have also taught K-12 religion at several Catholic schools, ranging from basic catechesis to more specialized focus, such as Paschal Mystery, Foundations of Church, and Moral Theology. I am also certified to Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which is a Montessori-based way to teach theology for 3-12 year olds.

General Music

I have a Master's certification in Music Education K-12 and am certified in TN and OH. I also have taught K-8 music for 6 years, focusing on general music, music theory, vocal music instruction, and composition. I also act as a music minister at several churches in the area and play guitar, piano, in which I am classically trained, and sing, in which I am also classically trained.
