About Nicholas

A former international professional baseball player in my 11th year as a collegiate baseball coach, I have a background as an elementary school teacher and special education/special needs assistant. My teaching method is very positive and energetic. I find great joy in making material relevant to students' immediate lives and surroundings. I am a husband and father and I come from a huge family so my rapport with youngsters has always been strong. My educational background is in History and Education and I'm comfortable with assisting with all elementary and middle school subjects as well as HS history, writing, and lower level mathematics. I took AP Calculus in HS but have not dabbled in mathematics or the sciences much since HS and undergrad. Additionally, I do private baseball/softball instruction as well as fitness training (not a certified strength and fitness coordinator). I look forward to the opportunity to improve your child's educational and/or athletic experiences.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Baseball

I am in my 11th year as a collegiate baseball coach. I was a head coach at the NCAA Division II/NAIA level as well as an assistant at the NCAA I, II, and III levels. Additionally, I played professionally at the international level. I have done private instruction on and off for a decade and my background as an educator assists my teaching methods.

Basketball

I played on a state ranked high school team in Wisconsin and worked as a youth camp instructor for several years. In 2002-03 I was the head junior varsity and assistant varsity girls coach at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua, WI. My wife is a standout former high school player and a two-year girls high school coach in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Elementary (K-6th)

I conducted my student teaching at the 4th grade level at Lac du Flambeau Public School in Lac du Flambeau, WI. I as also a long-term substitute for PK-8th library media skills at Lac du Flambeau public school. Additionally, I was a substitute teacher at Altoona School District, Eau Claire School District, Cuba City School District, and Southwestern School District, all in WI. In 2004 I worked as a special needs paraprofessional in Bryant School, Dubuque, IA. I currently do private baseball instruction for elementary-aged baseball players.

Fitness

I am an 11 year collegiate baseball coach and former professional player. During my coaching career I have designed strength and conditioning programs, worked individually with players, and maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle myself. Plyometrics, weight training, dynamic movements, and body control are all key elements of my training of athletes. I am NOT a certified strength coach.

Microsoft Publisher

I frequently use Publisher to make signage, flyers, brochures, invitations, etc. I also used it to create a quarterly newsletter for my college baseball team. I aim to show users the potential of Publisher and how it can easily be used to create attractive media. This program is something for kids through professional adults.

Public Speaking

As a coach and clinician/instructor, I regularly use public speaking skills to deliver instructions. I have been a presenter and speaker at several coaching clinics and banquets. As an instructor of public speaking I encourage preparation, confidence, and understanding of audience to maximize the effect of the presentation. Proper grammar, syntax, and vocabulary are additional key points to my instruction.

Social Studies

My undergraduate degree is in history with my main concentration being US history and WWII. I have a great passion for social studies and history on the local, regional, state, national, and international levels. Social studies are more than just dates and facts but the study of how and why events take place.

Softball

I am in my 11th year as a collegiate baseball coach. I was a head coach at the NCAA Division II/NAIA level as well as an assistant at the NCAA I, II, and III levels. Additionally, I played professionally at the international level. I have done private instruction on and off for a decade and my background as an educator assists my teaching methods. In 2002 I was the director of the Santa Margarita HS softball camp and was an assistant for the Notre Dame College softball team in 2008 during their national championship tournament appearance.

Study Skills

My undergrad GPA was 3.5 and graduate GPA was 3.9. I have a background in elementary education and have tutored elementary, middle school, highs school, and college students. I implemented mandatory study tables with my college baseball team, which responded with a team cumulative GPA over a 3.0.
