I am currently about to go into my seventh year of teaching. I spent two years in Colonial School District in Plymouth Meeting, PA serving both years in an inclusive classroom, which was great with my special education background. Both years I taught fourth grade, with a major focus on language arts and math. I just finished my fourth year in Mastery Charter Schools, teaching fourth grade writing and math to two classes. Next year, I will again teach in an inclusive classroom all subjects in the fifth grade.
I am a 2008 graduate of Eastern University with a bachelor's degree in Elementary and Special Education. I am currently pursuing a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction with the desire to become a curriculum planner for elementary education. To align with that, I would like to start tutoring children so I can get an idea of how they think outside of the classroom.
As an educator, I believe that it is important to teach children how to figure out the specific as to why they do not understand certain material. If you just teach a child how to fix one problem, then they will only know how to fix that one problem. But if you teach a child how to solve a problem with a specific strategy or write a prompt based on a variety of topics, or how to fluently read a book, then you are not just fixing an error but making a change in the way the child feels and understands the material.
My favorite thing to see is the "ah ha" moment when a student understands how to solve a specific problem that they have been struggling with on their own. Confidence in yourself is half the battle. The information is there...we just got to figure out how to put it on the paper. With my help and hard work, anything is possible. I am currently about to go into my seventh year of teaching. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught fourth grade for the past five years, and have a bachelors degree in both elementary and special education. The bulk of my career has been in working with students in grades 3-5.
