About Julie

Hello! I wanted to let you know a little bit about myself. I've been a college instructor for 7 years now, teaching Freshman Composition and Intro to Lit. In my spare time, I tutor. While my Master's degree is in English Literature, I also took quite a bit of science and math, so I tutor in a variety of subjects.

I love to tutor, even more so than teaching, because I get to work one on one with a student to find out what particular issue that student has that is making the material difficult to master. I love to see students smile because they suddenly get it, whatever the "it" is. The last thing I want is for a student to feel like he/she just isn't good at math, for example, and never will be. I feel like I help students feel better about themselves by finding ways to help them learn better.

I've been tutoring for 6 years. I started out tutoring ACT and SAT prep, but I quickly branched out into other areas. I tutor Math up through Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, as well as for English and History classes. I've also tutored GRE prep. My students range from 3rd graders to college-age students. I am one of the most requested tutors in my area because I work hard at making personal connections with my students and discovering what makes learning difficult for them.

Hopefully I can help you/your student find a passion for learning again by helping boost your confidence and your ability to learn and master the material.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

For the ACT in particular, I have been trained by a professional tutoring company on various methods for ACT prep based on current best practices, tutor and student feedback, and my own experience.

ACT Math

I have tutored in ACT Math and Verbal for the last 5 years, bringing my students' composite scores up by an average of 4 points. I mainly use Summit's program, which is the only program out so far with the latest ACT changes. My main approach, aside from reviewing the material and the test, is to find your particular strengths and weaknesses so we can help you take the test to the best of your ability. I want you to go into the test with confidence and armed with strategies and knowledge!

Because I am new to Wyzant, I don't have any student feedback posted, but I can provide comments from other students/parents, if you'd like.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring students for the last five years in various math subjects. I happen to love math - not just doing the math, but understanding the why behind it, which is something I try to foster in my students so they feel confident in their abilities instead of resigned to a future of poor grades.

Proofreading

I have a Master's degree in English Literature, and I've taught at the college level for 10 years. I also have 20 years experience with writing and editing.

Writing

I have 20 years experience as a freelance writer, and 10 years experience as a Freshman Composition and Introduction to Literature instructor at various colleges.
