##### About Joseph

My teaching career began in Baltimore County Public Schools where I taught Pre-Algebra, Standard Algebra I, and GT Algebra I to seventh and eighth graders. During my time there, I provided students with hands-on experiences with mathematics helping them to take a new look at mathematics and the many different ways that it can approached. I'm a firm believer in conceptual understanding of mathematics over memorization. After my time teaching, I was offered a position as a mathematics coach with a company called National Training Network (NTN). Here, I coached middle school and high school algebra teachers on making lessons more engaging and conceptual. After two years as a coach, I decided to pursue a graduate degree and simultaneously worked with NTN and Edison Learning to write Common Core aligned Elementary and Middle School mathematics texts. One component of the job was to develop interactive Power Point presentations that were eventually turned into learning support videos for use by students and teachers. After completing my graduate degree in Secondary Mathematics, I went back to coaching teachers in New York City Public Schools supporting teachers from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

With my experiences as a teacher, writer, and coach, I've learned many different ways to present mathematics to students. I've always loved giving students the opportunity to see math in a positive light. Many students have negative past experiences with mathematics and I've found that bringing new methods to learning and having multiple ways to explain concepts is one of the ways to build confidence and change a student's mindset.

With my experiences as a mathematics coach, I have seen hundreds of teachers teach. Some teachers wonderful and others with plenty of room for improvement. However, I've been able to take all of the wonderful strategies and collect a bag of tricks that I find to be resourceful in helping a variety of students be successful in their mathematics courses.

During my time with National Training Network, I created over 500 PowerPoint presentations that brought to life math instruction. Aside from taking courses such as Instructional Technology, requiring extensive use of Microsoft PowerPoint, I had plenty of opportunities to practice using its many features to develop lessons that are colorful, interactive, and engaging.

Please don't hesitate to contact me regarding any of my past work experiences, questions you may have about my credentials or style, or to find a time that you'd like to meet for tutoring services. I look forward to hearing from you!
