Language arts and history can be especially difficult subjects for students who do not have initial interest in these areas, so I enjoy the challenge of making learning interesting and relevant to my students.
During the summer and in my spare time, I also tutor primary and secondary high school students, including those with disabilities who cannot attend school and perform home school evaluations.
Language fascinates me, and teaching Spanish language and culture is my specialty! My students learn grammar, culture/history, and slang through both traditional and dynamic instructional techniques. We sing popular Spanish songs, cook, read the news, etc., in the target language in addition to formal language training.
As a teacher, I love to learn! Traveling the world has been a passion of mine since I began a medical internship and advanced my language skills in Mexico. I have also traveled to Bolivia, Ecuador, and the Galapagos Islands, and taken student groups to Spain and Costa Rica for cultural and language immersion experiences. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

In college, I tutored incoming freshman in areas such as study skills, basic general education courses, Spanish, and Biology. I taught in a public school for five years. I also taught evening SAT Test Prep courses while working for a professional tutoring company. I help students identify their individual learning styles and show them how to implement that specific style into their study/homework sessions. I also stress the importance of proper highlighting techniques, note taking and effective time frames for studying (i.e., constant studying, not occasional cramming. As a Spanish teacher, it was crucial to teach proper study techniques as most students had absolutely no previous experience with the material. Recommendations from previous and/or present employers are available upon request.
