My first tutoring experience was with my daughter when she was in middle school. Even though she was a very good student, she had never learned to write a strong essay. To show her the different ways to structure an essay, we reviewed "The Three Little Pigs" and "Cinderella." It was funny to combine children's stories with a serious subject! She caught on right away. I can help students to write essays, paragraphs, business letters, resumes, cover letters and other correspondence. I am a passionate reader as well, so I can also help with understanding English-language literature.
I love writing and languages. I won a prize for creative writing when I was in high school, have published several books and now write stories about our family's adventures. As a professional writer, I have edited and written for a variety of publications.
I am especially expert at helping students revise and edit papers for high school, college and graduate classes for any subject area. When papers include technical information, I can work with students to make sure that the language is clear and conveys the important points.
One of my recent students, from another country, had to turn in a book report for a graduate class. Although I was familiar with the book's topic, I had not read it. Since his written English was not adequate, he had received permission from his professor to have the text edited by a tutor. In one session, I revised his work to best express his ideas, even those that he had had difficulty stating. Since I read very fast, I was able to find sources in the book quickly.
My second language is French, in which I majored at the University of Pennsylvania. I use it with my husband, who came from France originally, and my granddaughter, who learned French at school. I can help students with French pronunciation, grammar, reading and conversation as well as understanding French literature and culture.
Note to prospective French students: I tutor adults or students who are preparing for a visit to a French-speaking country and want to learn some basic French for the trip. I also work with middle school or high school students in French 1 and 2, especially with beginning conversation, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. I do not tutor students in French 3 and 4 except in special circumstances.
At one point in my career, I worked with adults who needed to improve job-related reading and writing skills. I particularly enjoyed planning these lessons. Adult students bring their life experiences with them, so there is a rich background on which to draw.
My Master's Degree is in English as a Second Language, which I completed at the Universite de Montreal in Quebec, Canada. I have taught ESL at community colleges in the Philadelphia area.
As a tutor, I look for ways to capture the student's interest so the subject doesn't feel like a burden. I take a creative approach to each student's individual learning challenges to design the best strategies based on that person's needs and interests.
I am very patient and don't mind going over the same material until the student understands. The most important thing about learning is not to be anxious or scared, and to feel confident. Inspiring students with belief in their own ability is the key to successful tutoring, in my view.
1. I have developed a very successful strategy for learning, practicing and remembering vocabulary and grammar in English and French. Ask me about it!
2. I prefer to work with students aged 12 and over, as well as adults, since I don't have training in elementary education. My first tutoring experience was with my daughter when she was in middle school. Even though she was a very good student, she had never learned to write a strong essay. To show her the different ways to structure an essay, we reviewed "The Three Little Pigs" and "Cinderella." It was funny to
My son really struggled with French. Sandy showed unbelievable compassion and patience. She met him where he was and built his confidence along with his skills. We are incredibly grateful for her expertise and lovely manner.
Responsible, passionate, and patient. That's what she is. She will always support you and help you with the best she can give you. And I have to say, she is one of those teachers who really care about their students and would willing to carry the responsibilities. Just go for it. You won't regret.
Sandra is very experienced, and very patient. Also very quick to get back to you. I highly recommend her service.
Sandra pays attention to the details that can trick a student. Sandra encourages speaking in French during the lesson fine tuning my daughter's French skills. My daughter is building tremendous confidence in the classroom and having fun during her lesson. She leaves with a smile on her face.
My daughter finds her sessions with Sandra to be really helpful and enjoyable. She is very patient and knowledgeable and has a lovely manner. Sandra responds to emails very quickly and always makes time for my child.
I find Sandra to be amazing, and a wonderful tutor and would recommend her to both friends and family! She is so patient! Ten Stars!
Sandra has provided our daughter 4 lessons already and we hope this will be the beginning of a great relationship.
She clicked with our daughter right away, is very successfully tailoring the lessons to meet the specific interests and needs, and is very good at communicating status information.
Strongly recommend Sandra.
Update to review after a year or more of meetings.
We are absolutely delighted with the relationship between Sandra and our daughter. They work together well, coordinate the lesson content together, provide a mix of support for school work, support for general improved French for our daughters pleasure in areas of interest beyond school so she can be comfortable talking about her own interests in her new language, support for general conversational French (which seems different than the more "literary French" approach at the school.
Anyway, we couldn't be happier and strongly recommend Sandra C.
We came to USA just around 2 years, and my daughter 12 years now, needs catching up for the English study, writing. Fortunately I found Sandra who is very patient and reliable. Yes, I want to thank you Sandra.
Sandra is a great English teacher. I felt very relaxed and comfortable while talking with her. And her class is very helpful. A+++!!! Highly recommended.
Sandy is awesome. She is very patient, caring and honest. She has a very calm and soothing spirit. She offered great resources that I was able to use daily. If you're looking for someone that cares and is very supportive, she is the person for you!
Sandra helped my son in French and even though he ended up changing the subject at school, she was the most reliable and clear person to teach him. She went out of her way to put some French into my son's brain! She practiced, drilled, and used technology as an extension of the lesson. Always on time, well prepared, clearly a seasoned tutor that knows what she is doing, and she does it well. I would recommend her to any one without hesitation. You won't be disappointed!
We are going to a wedding in Paris in the fall and decided to learn a little french for the occasion.
Sandra has been a wonderful teacher. We have made so much progress in such a short time. She loves the language and is so obviously delighted to be sharing it with us. Her enthusiasm makes it so much fun to learn.
Sandra is a great French teacher and adjusts well to younger and older students - very professional! Thanks Sandra!!
I really like Sandra! She is very patient and kind. I'm glad to have such a good tutor to teach me English before I leave the United States. We cover a different topic every time, and she is always well prepared for the lesson. I really want to recommend Sandra to other students!
Sandra is an amazing tutor who was both patient and very knowledgeable. She was also thorough in her teaching approach providing me with numerous sample expressions and practical applications.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My focus on teaching English is to coordinate skills in grammar, speaking and writing so that students see how they work together. I also use short texts (poetry, fiction or non-fiction) by writers in the United States and other countries to provide a meaningful framework for the lessons.
As a native speaker of English, I had to work hard over a period of years to develop fluency in French, my second language; I experienced myself the challenges of learning pronunciation, grammar and idioms. I pursued a Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language so that I could help students improve their fluency in English. Recently I taught beginning and intermediate students from a variety of countries at local community colleges. English is not an easy language to learn but there are specific exercises that can provide a way to overcome many of the difficulties. Watching television, conversing with native speakers and using the Internet are all excellent resources when combined with a skilled tutor.
I majored in French at the University of Pennsylvania and I hold an MA in Second Language Teaching from the Universite de Montreal in Quebec. My husband is originally from France so we use it at home. Having learned it over a period of years through my own efforts (as an English speaker from Philadelphia), I really understand the challenges of learning a language. In this way I can provide high-quality assistance to students who just need a brush up or to those who are in trouble or who feel they have little facility for languages.
It seems that many people in our society dread speaking to groups, but there are many strategies to overcome this fear. I began as a public speaker many years ago when I needed to give presentations about the organization where I was working. Since then I have given all kinds of presentations, read my own original writing, and made requests for financial support. I believe that every individual has something important to share with others; it's just a matter of learning how to prepare the talk and then deliver it. Being nervous isn't necessarily an indication that the speaker is poorly prepared. Rather, it's part of the adrenaline rush that helps to do a good job. Harnessing this energy is the key to being confident when speaking in public. The rewards of giving an outstanding talk outweigh the challenges!
I focus on showing students a process for clarifying their ideas and engaging the reader. Regardless of the type of writing (essays, memos, stories) it's essential that the reader easily grasp the point. There are many ways to make the text lively, persuasive, etc. I love writing so I enjoy sharing it with others.
