I'm Jeff! I graduated with two Bachelor's degrees in History and Elementary Education. I am certified in Elementary Education and Secondary Education Social Studies. I have always had a passion for reading, especially history, and I was able to pursue this passion through education. Fortunately, I've had some great experiences with teachers in high school and my professors in college which inspired me to become an educator. I also have a Master's Degree in Classroom Technology/Education which has helped me keep up with some of the new technology used in classrooms today.
My first year of teaching I became the 7th grade Reading teacher and the Social Studies teacher for advanced placement students in 7th and 8th grade. During this school year, I also tutored a student the entire year in various subjects. The student did very well academically with the additional sessions and we spent many hours going over every subject he had in 8th grade. He particularly struggled in Social Studies class. I found many different students learn in different ways and as a tutor, it was my job to find out their strengths and areas that needed improvement. We created timelines, drew maps, discussed important historical events, read small passages and discussed the importance of learning about the world around him. This was definitely one of my favorite teaching experiences!
That same year I was able to implement a reading program in my classroom to help students struggling with comprehension and fluency. The program allowed me to work with four or five students at a time to help improve their reading level. This proved to be beneficial to many of the students and I was able to identify the areas they needed assistance. In the small group setting, I was able to provide individualized instruction, particularly blending sounds and checking comprehension. I was also available after school for students who needed additional instruction. This was a great opportunity and many students improved and became more confident in their reading ability.
For the next ten years, I taught in an alternative center for those struggling with behavior and emotional issues. During these years, I taught several subjects at the middle school level, including Math, Reading and Science, but I mostly taught Social Studies to students from 7th-12th grade. I assisted many 12th grade students with their senior projects and initiated many different ways to learn about history. By teaching about current events, I was able to provide them a window into different areas of history. The reasons some events take place today has a lot to do with history and having this knowledge can make them knowledgeable citizens. World History, American History, Geography, Psychology, and current events were some of the areas I covered extensively.
I want the students I teach to benefit and develop a passion for the subject they are learning. I am open to suggestions and I am extremely adaptable. My goal is for the student and parent to have the best experience possible. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and schedule a lesson.
