About Stephanie

I was inspired by a love of singing at nine years old, when my elementary school music and choir teacher encouraged me to take lessons with her at the Maryland Conservatory of Music. I have been singing ever since, and at my voice teacher's suggestion I began performing in musicals just a few years later to expand my singing opportunities. I loved singing and performing onstage in musicals so much that I decided to pursue music in college. This past May, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from New York University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance with a concentration in Music Theatre.

Some of my favorite memories of singing come from the time I spent one-on-one with my voice teachers, learning how incredible the human voice is and what my voice would be capable of as I practiced and matured. I want to teach other aspiring singers and performers about music, singing, and theatre because of the positive impact they have had in my life. My experience taking voice lessons for the past 13 years, as well as my time spent studying music theory, aural skills, acting, and dance provide me with the ability to teach both brand new and experienced singers how to develop their voice, musicianship, and performance skills.

My qualifications for teaching voice lessons come from my time spent studying at NYU Steinhardt, including four semesters of Aural Comprehension (Includes Ear Training and Sight Singing), two semesters of Basic Musicianship, four semesters of Music Theory, and eight semesters of Private Voice Lessons. Prior to NYU, I took 9 years of Private Voice Lessons and 4 years of Private Piano Lessons at the Maryland Conservatory of Music. Qualifications for teaching acting include two semesters of Speech and Diction (based on Linklater Voice Training), three semesters of acting taught by professional actors/directors, and four semesters of Song Analysis (Acting through Song) all at NYU Steinhardt. I was also a member of the Sharon Playhouse Collegiate Company 2015 (professional regional theater) where I spent several months working alongside professional actors and directors. Over the past 10 years, I have performed in at least two musicals/operas/operettas per year.

I love meeting new people who are passionate about the same subjects as me. I view private teaching as a collaboration between two people who share new thoughts and ideas to help each other grow and learn. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning to sing, because each person's voice is different. While there are technical skills that need to be obtained while singing and learning music, it ultimately leads up to the singer's ability to express himself or herself with the voice, which is a powerful and beautiful gift.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I will be graduating from New York University's Steinhardt School of Music in May 2016. I have taken four semesters of Aural Comprehension, which includes both ear training and sight singing. I received the grade of "A" for all of my Aural Comprehension courses. Good ear training begins by learning solfege with movable "do," and eventually moves towards recognizing the amount of space between solfege syllables to distinguish intervals and chord types by ear.

Sight Singing

I will be graduating from New York University's Steinhardt School of Music in May 2016. I have taken four semesters of Aural Comprehension, which includes both ear training and sight singing. I received the grade of "A" for all of my Aural Comprehension courses. While developing a solid ear training foundation based on movable "do," reading along with notes on the staff and listening to how the notes sound simultaneously will develop sight singing skills.

Theater

I will be graduating from New York University's Steinhardt School of Music, where my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance degree is specialized in Music Theatre. Music Theatre majors are required to take acting courses as well as perform in university productions. I have had two semesters of Speech and Diction (based on Linklater Voice Training), three semesters of acting taught by professional actors/directors, and four semesters of Song Analysis (Acting through Song). I was also a member of the Sharon Playhouse Collegiate Company 2015 (professional regional theater) performing in two mainstage productions. In total, I have performed in at least two musicals/operas/operettas per year for the past 10 years.

Voice (Music)

I will be graduating from New York University's Steinhardt School of Music in May 2016 with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. During my time at NYU, I have had eight semesters of Private Voice Lessons, receiving a grade of "A" every semester. I successfully completed my Senior Recital for Voice, fulfilling a major graduation requirement. Prior to NYU, I had nine years of Private Voice Lessons at the Maryland Conservatory of Music, as well as four years of Private Piano Lessons at the Conservatory. I have learned about the anatomy and inner workings of the voice through my voice lessons, as well as numerous vocal exercises to properly warm-up the voice. My piano skills allow me to learn new songs with ease and therefore teach new songs to students. I am well-versed in the musical theater genre, as well as opera/operetta and art songs.
