Subsequently, I spent seven years as a member of the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa, performing symphony, opera and ballet music. I am also the recipient of numerous scholarships including The Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts, Congress of Strings and the Mann Summer Institute. Presently, I perform as a member of the Princeton Symphony Orchestra and the Riverside Symphonia, where I serve as principal second violinist, as well as other orchestras. I have been teaching violin lessons for over thirty years in private schools, the Temple University Community Music Program, and in my home.

I accept students of all ages and levels. I am a traditional teacher, meaning I will teach the student to read music and count rhythm. It is my goal that you will be able to pick up a new piece of music and play it without ever having heard the piece. I also incorporate ear training and music theory into the lessons. I hope to pass on my love of music to my students, whether or not they continue their music studies in college.

Reading

I teach reading using phonics so that a child, or adult, will be able to sound out words on their own. Phonics will also contribute to excellent spelling skills. I have homeschooled my daughter since kindergarten (she's now in 11th grade) and she is a proficient reader. Recently, she scored a 700 out of a possible 760 on the reading portion of the PSAT.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I do ear training with all of my students. As a string player, well-trained ears are an absolute necessity. I use Solfeggio (the study of do - re - mi) to train the ear to hear pitch and intervals. I use movable "Do," as opposed to fixed "Do." I took two years of ear training classes in high school. I also did ear training in two summer music camps I attended prior to college. Subsequently, I took another two years of ear training at Temple University, as required for my Bachelor of Music degree.
Music Theory,

Music Theory

I have always enjoyed music theory. I studied two years of theory in high school, two summers of theory at music camps, and two more years in college as required by my music degree. I also incorporate theory into the violin lessons I teach.
Sight Singing,

Sight Singing

I use Solfeggio with all of my students. It is a very efficient means of teaching ear training and sight-singing. I first studied sight singing for two years in high school, as well as summer music camps. Subsequently, I took two more years of sight singing at Temple University as required for my Bachelor of Music degree.
Violin

Violin

I have my Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance from Temple University. After graduating I taught for Temple's Community Music Program. I won a violin position with the Natal Philharmonic Orch. in Durban, South Africa. I spent seven years in South Africa playing symphony, ballet and opera, as well as teaching violin lessons at a private school. Since returning to the United States I freelance with several local symphonies and teach private lessons in my home and a private school.
