About Kathy

I will work with your child, meeting him/her where they are at and will devise a plan to develop their reading, writing and math abilities. You child's success is a joint effort between you, the parent, your son or daughter, and myself. We can achieve success when we all work together for a common goal! I have worked as a substitute teacher for several years and have completed Keystone College's Post-Bac Teacher Accelerated Certification Program.

Prior to obtaining my teaching certification, I worked for 24 years as a Paralegal but also worked with children-through a youth center where I developed many youth programs and organized an after-school program which operated for two years. Returning to school to obtain my teaching degree has enabled me now to pursue my passion - teaching! I worked several years as an Educational Interpreter for the Deaf, utilizing ASL and Total Communication, to aide in the education of deaf/hard of hearing students.

Working with children in these many ways confirmed my passion to teach. When presenting new concepts and strategies to students, I am positive, encouraging and supportive in all of their efforts. Students learn in many different ways and I will work with your child to find his/her best way to learn-visually, tactile, auditory, performance-based! I believe all students have the ability to succeed, you child just needs to right support-both with me as their tutor, you as their parent and their classroom teacher.

If you choose me to work with your child, we will review your child's Progress Reports, Report Cards, and IEP (if one is in place) and I will obtain information from your child's classroom teacher for advise on which areas to focus in our tutoring lessons. It will be a team effort and your son or daughter will learn how to succeed! I cannot do it alone so you, as the parent/caregiver, must agree to work with me and support any homework assignments or projects.

My goal is to work with your child, and you. My goal is to teach-I love to teach...to see that concept finally understood! I love to see a child's face when they realize they have mastered the concept!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have completed Early Literacy Development for 3-5 year olds as well as Teaching Reading & Writing to 2nd -4th graders. I put to use the strategies taught during my recent student teaching in 1st and 3rd grade classrooms.

During my 3rd grade placement I taught the Everyday Math Curriculum and am also trained in teaching English Language Learners.

Most recently I worked as a tutor with a 3rd grader who struggles with phonics skills. We practiced increasing sight words, decoding, context clues and daily reading (at his present level) practice. We also worked on his writing skills. For one assignment we walked the neighborhood and created an Alphabet Box to assist his word choices in paragraph writing. I make learning meaningful and purposeful, to engage your child.
