About Suzanne

Teaching voice and music for the past twelve years has given me great insight into how students learn. I studied Creative Arts at Dawson College, and Obtained my BFA at Concordia University both in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I completed coursework in French, and ESL or Peer Tutoring. I've even had some success in teaching ESL through singing at the request of my former students. I'm fluent in French and adore French culture. I taught Voice at L'Academie de Musique de Lasalle in Montreal, and both Voice and French at Yocum Institute for the Arts in Wyomissing, Pa. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have taken several composition courses in my studies at Concordia University. Though counterpoint is not my forte, I have extensive knowledge about musical form, harmony, and melodic function. I have composed many songs myself, some of which can be heard on the Big Beat Tornado website and CD. I have a great deal of experience writing melodic hooks, and vocal harmonies.

Ear Training

I have a DEC form Dawson College in Creative Arts and BFA in Integrative Music Studies from Concordia University both in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As part of the required coursework for both degrees I passed extensive classes in ear training and have achieved a very advanced level of ear training as a result. I have relative perfect pitch and through training singers for more than 10 years I have developed methods of helping students acquire an understanding and mastery of pitch.

General Music

I have a BFA in Integrative Music Studies from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I taught music classes at the Yocum Institute for the Arts in Wyomissing, PA, for 7 years.

Music History

I have a DEC form Dawson College in Creative Arts and BFA in Integrative Music Studies from Concordia University both in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. As part of the required coursework for both degrees I had classes in music history and music literature as well as history of jazz and women in music.

Sight Singing

I have sung in choirs since I was in fourth grade. While obtaining my BFA in Integrative Music Studies from Concordia University I was required to participate in choir, but I also chose to continue my coursework by participating in the most advanced choirs in the college such as chamber choir. This experience combined with the ear training and music theory classes that were part of my core curriculum have helped me obtain a high level of sight singing. I am constantly looking for new tools to help my students increase their proficiency.

Songwriting

I have taken several composition courses in my studies at Concordia University. I have extensive knowledge about musical form, harmony, and melodic function. I have composed many songs myself, some of which can be heard on the Big Beat Tornado website and CD. I have a great deal of experience writing melodic hooks, and vocal harmonies.I also compose lyrics and have a great talent for fitting lyrics with melody. I have also developed composed chord progressions to support a melodic line. I can help anyone develop these skills.

Voice (Music)

I teach voice currently and have taught private voice lessons at the Academie de Musique de Lasalle and the Youcum Institute for the Arts in Wyomissing, PA. I have actively taught voice since I graduated from Concordia University in May of 2000. My students have seen great success in improving their vocal strength, range, tone, and pitch. Over the years I have learned how to quickly diagnose an individual student's vocal needs.
