About Debra

I am an educator with over 20 years of experience working with students of all ages. I have taught high school General Science, Biology, and Food and Nutrition classes.

In addition to many years working in the traditional classroom, I’ve taught after-school enrichment programs, provided homebound instruction, and taught environmental classes at nature centers.

My credentials include a B.A. in Biology from New Jersey City University, and a Master of Science degree in Food and Nutrition from New York University. My teaching certifications include Family and Consumer Sciences, and Comprehensive Science K-12.

I’ve always had a love of Botany. Since 2006 I have worked each year with the plant identification team for the annual Union County Bio-Blitz, an event in New Jersey that seeks to identify as many species of flora and fauna as possible within a particular habitat area. I have worked as a part-time Naturalist for Morris County Park Commission since 1999, where I conduct interpretive hikes and provide nature presentations to the public. I am also a Certified Rutgers Master Gardener, and through this program I was awarded the President’s Volunteer Award twice, in 2009 and 2010.

In my teaching approach I assess the needs of my new students very carefully. All students possess unique strengths. They also have unique learning styles. We will work with your strengths, and use your individual learning style in order to reduce stress, increase self-esteem, and make learning more enjoyable.

It’s important that instruction is individualized, and I will take the time to tailor our sessions to your specific learning needs. I also feel it's essential to keep tutoring sessions unintimidating, and even fun. After all, how can you learn when you're stressed out?

I strive to make my explanations as clear as possible. To help lead you to your own answers, I will ask questions. I will ask for your honest feedback during lessons. Using a flexible approach, together we will find ways to make information clear and understandable. I feel that a good teacher will bring out the best in a student, and that is exactly my goal.

Please feel free to contact me about any questions you may have. I look forward to helping you to reach your goals!
