I have a great love for teaching because of its challenges and the great responsibility that a teacher has to his/her students to instill an interest and knowledge in the subject matter. Because of this, I continually strive to improve as an educator. My passion for teaching is also evident in my work as a Biology Professor at the undergraduate level, and as a Math and Reading tutor for a local learning center.
To succeed, I believe in good two-way communication between a teacher and student and my students are encouraged to actively participate in their own education. I present problems to solve and help them understand complex ideas and develop valuable learning skills that germinate into independent study.
My tutoring subjects are in Math and Biology. I teach Math in the areas of Elementary, Middle and High School Math, covering topics from Algebra (Pre-, 1 and 2), Factorization, Quadratic Equations, Graphing and Geometry. In Biology, I teach all levels of Biology from Middle, High School and Undergraduate and Graduate Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology and Genetics.
I use study materials that are readily available from school, or bookstores and websites and assign homework and assessments. I also discuss the progress of my students with their parents often.
My schedule is flexible. I am available most days and weekends, and am able to travel to meet with students.
I look forward to meeting and helping all students meet their academic goals! Karen tutored my 9th grade daughter for the SAT Subject Matter test in Biology. Her ability to teach my daughter concepts was outstanding! Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. I would highly recommend her for any tutoring needs in the sciences and math. She even helped my daughter with an upcoming Algebra 2 test. We used Karen a number of times and can't thank her enough for her knowledge and experience. My daughter loved working with her.
Karen worked w my 9th grade daughter on certain Biology concepts and helped clarify problems she was having. She was courteous, punctual and professional. My daughter will definitely use her again in the future as she prepares for finals.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a PhD in Microbiology and work as a Biology professor teaching undergraduate Biology courses including Human Biology, General Biology, Genetics, Microbiology and Environmental Biology. I have tutored students in high school biology for Keystone exams and also for the SAT Biology Subject test.
I tutor reading comprehension and grammar to elementary and middle school students at a learning center and have been tutoring there for 9 years.
